Bar stools have a way of hatching good ideas. Mark McDonnell had his eureka moment parked beside the taps at Edwards’ Crazy Mountain Brewery. “I knew breweries repurposed their spent grains,” McDonnell says, “and I thought, Why not turn them into a dog treat?” McDonnell had homebrewed and grew chummy with the Crazy Mountain crew upon moving to the Vail Valley. After experimenting with various recipes and partnering with his friend Kyle Velvis (who shares McDonnell’s fondness for dogs and beer), McDonnell launched BrewSki Bones in July 2012. The company’s handmade, all-natural dog treats are made only with human-grade ingredients, including spent grains used to create Crazy Mountain’s ales. “We consulted with veterinarians to make sure our recipe was ideal,” McDonnell says. Apparently, it worked: Dogs devour the bones, and even pooches with sensitive stomachs enjoy the treats. Says McDonnell: “It’s hooch for your pooch.” brewskibones.com
