Park Hill resident Verne Harris has called eight Final Four games during his 28-year college officiating career. Here’s what it’s like to be on the floor during the Big Dance.

5280: Do you get more grief than usual from coaches and players during the tournament?

Verne Harris: No, they’re probably better behaved because all eyes are on them. They’re really pressed about their behavior.

How about fans?

Sure, if their team loses. If they lose, it’s a terrible game from the refs. But —well, I don’t want this to sound bad—but fans don’t know what they’re talking about. So it doesn’t mean much.

Any calls that still haunt you?

No, not really. You miss them and you move on…You guys scream and yell, but no one feels worse than we do.
