MEET THE EDITORS OF 5280 MAGAZINE
Daniel Brogan Daniel Brogan is the founder, editor, and publisher of 5280: Denver's Magazine. Launched from his second bedroom in 1993, 5280 is now the largest local magazine in Colorado. It has higher market penetration than any other city magazine in America, and regularly outsells such national titles as Time, People, Oprah, and Martha Stewart Living on local newsstands. The magazine's stories often make national headlines and, in 2005, 5280 was nominated for two National Magazine Awards, the magazine industry's equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Under Brogan's leadership, the magazine supports a wide variety of civic, cultural, and philanthropic organizations. It was also one of the first city magazines to print on recycled paper. Previously a reporter and columnist for the Chicago Tribune, Brogan's work has appeared in numerous magazines, including Rolling Stone, Musician, Creem, and PC World. He sits on the board of the City and Regional Magazine Association and is regularly asked to speak at publishing industry events. He has a journalism degree from Indiana University and is an avid cyclist. He lives in Denver with his son, Jack. ![]() Maximillian Potter Maximillian Potter writes and edits many 5280 feature narratives and investigative reports. In his role of writer, he has twice been nominated for National Magazine awards, in the categories of Public Interest and Reportingalong with honors from the Military Reporters and Editors association, the Investigative Reporters and Editors, the American Bar Association, Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, and the Michael Kelly Award. Judges for the Kelly Award have commented that "Potter's articles are hard to put down. They're beautifully written, ambitious in intent, and-most of all-fearless in their pursuit of truth." In his role as an editor, Potter works with dedicated writers to produce meaningful magazine journalism. The collaborations have earned several awards, including a Livingston finalist selection, and, more recently, in 2008, a National Magazine Award nomination for Public Interest journalismmarking 5280's third NMA nomination in four years. Folio has cited Potter as one of the "Publishing Innovators to Watch" and a "Top Talent." He has been a staff writer at Premiere, Philadelphia and GQ. Frequently a speaker at journalism events, Potter has appeared on ABC'S 20/20 and Colorado Public Radio. He is on the board of directors for The Association of Military Journalists. A Philadelphia native, he obtained his Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University. He's 36 years old and lives in Denver with his wife, Lori, and two sons, Jack and True. ![]() Cara McDonald Cara McDonald oversees 5280's day-to-day editorial operations and is responsible for the magazine's editorial direction. In coming to 5280, McDonald wanted to incorporate literary storytelling and a strong sense of place in the magazine, and as the primary point person for pitches and story assignments is charged with finding the stories that look deeply at who we are as a region. She has been a writer and editor at the regional magazines Indianapolis Monthly and Traverse, where during her tenure both went on to win general excellence awards. In addition, her freelance work has appeared in Men's Journal, Midwest Living, and Sports Afield. McDonald earned her M.A. in creative nonfiction and composition theory at Colorado State University. ![]() Geoff Van Dyke As articles editor, Geoff Van Dyke edits narrative articles and features at 5280. Van Dyke joined the magazine in September 2007 after several years of freelance writing; his work has appeared in national publications including Men's Journal, Men's Health, Best Life, Outside, Bicycling, and Play: The New York Times Sports Magazine. Before his stint as a freelancer, Van Dyke was an editor at Men's Journal. He studied English as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley, and has a master's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He lives in Denver with his wife and son. ![]() Amanda Faison Amanda M. Faison oversees the dining section of the magazine and heads up all food coverage and feature stories. In addition to managing everything dining related, the avid runner and cyclist writes the Great Outdoors section as well as feature and service packages. Faison received top honors at the 2006 Maggie awards, winning Best Feature for "The Miracle of Molly," the story of the Nash family who genetically engineered a baby to save their dying daughter. She was also a 2005 finalist for the prestigious Livingston Awards for Young Journalists. Recently, Faison published a story about new Denver restaurants in Food & Wine and she regularly contributes to InStyle. ![]() Luc Hatlestad Luc Hatlestad is a senior editor at 5280. He previously was with the original Red Herring magazine in numerous positions, including senior writer and technology editor, and he also was the magazine's first-ever East Coast editor. His writing has appeared in Men's Journal, Premiere magazine, San Francisco magazine, Business 2.0, Salon.com and the American Journalism Review. He also has extensive experience as a writer and editor for technology and business trade periodicals, where he won two awards for feature writing from the American Society for Business Publication Editors. Luc has a BA in anthropology from Grinnell College and an MS from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. ![]() Lindsey Koehler As 5280's managing editor Lindsey Koehler oversees daily copy flow, manages monthly deadlines, and keeps writers and editors on track with their individual responsibilities. Koehler is also the magazine's travel editor in charge of the Getaways and Great Outdoors departments. With travel to more than 20 countries under her belt, Koehler is the 5280 expert on travel within Colorado and throughout the world. When she isn't editing departments, Koehler writes stories of her own. Her 2005 narrative "Undefeated" centered around her friend's unfortunate encounter with Denver's serial rapist Brent J. Brents. The piece was selected as Best Profile at the 2006 Maggie Awards. Koehler's other, more recent stories have focused on topics such as Denver's public school system, the local medical community, and Colorado's coal industry. Koehler has an ABJ in magazine journalism from the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism.
Robert Sanchez Robert Sanchez is a staff writer at 5280, writing mostly long-form features and narrative stories. A former newspaper writer for The Denver Post, the Rocky Mountain News, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Associated Press, Robert has won or has been nominated for multiple state and national awards, including the prestigious Livingston Awards for Young Journalists. A native of Massachusetts, Robert has lived in Colorado for more than two decades and attended Ponderosa High School in Parker. He graduated with honors from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Robert is 30 years old and is married to his high school sweetheart, Kristen. The two have a daughter, Alexandra, and a son, Michael.
Patrick Doyle As the associate editor of 5280, Patrick Doyle regularly writes about politics, religion, and crime, in addition to editing the magazine's front-of-the-book department. His freelance writing has appeared in Men's Journal, Skiing, and Philadelphia. A native of New York state, Doyle studied psychology as an undergraduate at Villanova University.
Julie Dugdale Julie Dugdale co-edits the front-of-the-book section, Atmosphere. She also writes and contributes to service features, departments, and narrative pieces. The East Coast native joined 5280's staff while earning her master's degree in journalism at the University of Colorado. Her writing has appeared in High Country News, Nationalgeographic.com/traveler, Hooked on the Outdoors Magazine, Alternative Medicine, and more.
Natasha Gardner Natasha Gardner manages the magazine's research department and contributes to service features. She previously worked in book publishing in New York before returning West to settle in Colorado. She has a B.A. from Smith College and is completing a master's degree in journalism at the University of Colorado.
Kazia Jankowski As 5280's online assistant editor, Kazia Jankowski researches and writes 5280.com's weekly events e-newsletter and edits its comprehensive dining and calendar listings. Her relentless exploration into Denver's culture, dining, music, arts, and entertainment makes her the magazine's events expert. Jankowski also contributes to the print edition of 5280, primarily focusing her efforts on food and travel articles. Prior to working for the magazine, this Denver native trotted the globe attending culinary school in Spain, testing recipes for Cook's Illustrated magazine in Boston, and writing the second edition of the guidebook Moon Peru. Her writing has also appeared in Budget Travel, Sunset, and Delicious Living.
Mike Leister Michael Leister is 5280's art director, overseeing the art department and maintaining the look and feel of the magazine. Leister also designs the cover, most feature stories, and assists with editorial planning. Prior to 5280, he was a senior art director at Indianapolis Monthly, where he designed features and the magazine's front of the book section. Over the course of his tenure, he received two Gold Medals for his work from the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists. Before Indianapolis Monthly, Leister worked for Sports Illustrated, designing features and columns as assistant art director.
Alese Pickering Beckett Alese Beckett is 5280's assistant art director. She designs some features, the front of the book sections including Atmosphere, regular departments, and the Dining section. Prior to 5280, Beckett worked extensively in the publishing industry, designing book covers for Simon & Schuster, Harper Collins, and Penguin Putnam in New York.
Steffanie Poyner Woodward 5280's photo editor, Steffanie Woodward, assigns, produces, and coordinates photo shoots for every section of 5280, including features and covers. Woodward also collects and researches stock photography, strategizes art options with the editorial staff, interviews potential new photographers, and works closely with both the art director and assistant art director to continually improve the overall quality of 5280's photography. Before arriving at the magazine, she worked as photo editor at Hooked on the Outdoors magazine. Woodward has a BFA from the University of Colorado. ![]() Georgia Benjou 5280's style guru brings the best of fashion week to Denver each April and August. With 10 years experience in the industry, Georgia has worked for top fashion houses including Hermes, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, and Chanel and can speak about national fashion trends, topics and designers. While this LA-based stylist may be able to spot fall's best collections, she also has a degree in English Literature and has completed post-graduate work in art history with an emphasis in Italian Renaissance painting and sculpture. |
