Where to Find Eco-Friendly, Locally Designed Scarves

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

mailHe’s a graphic designer and photographer. She’s a clothing and accessories designer. But Boulder-based husband-and-wife team Jonathan and Jessica Galbreath combine their skills with an eco-friendly philosophy when it comes to their label, Owl & Koi.

The duo repurposes timeworn, thrift-store T-shirts into stylish scarves. Their colorful neck warmers come in either monochromatic hues or multicolor themes like “Forest” (think tree-inspired greens and browns) and “Autumn” (a mix of orange and gold tones mixed with grounding neutrals).

And all you sentimental types can send Jonathan and Jessica your own threadbare Ts, and they’ll custom design a scarf for you.

$42-54 for ready-made and $54 for custom orders, owlandkoi.com.

Where to Find Great Fall Boots Right Now

Monday, October 26, 2009

The footwear statement for fall 2009 is the boot. From sexy and thigh-grazing to just-ankle-high, boots are the perfect accent to this season’s streamlined silhouettes. We’ve scoured Denver for the best options available this month:

Over-The-Knee Boot: The urban-warrior look found its match in the over-the-knee boot, but the tan, suede Tucson (right) by Corso Como leaves its basic-black cousins in the dust.

With a wearable heel and gel inserts in the footbeds, this boot is made for walking, while sleek styling shows off its fashion-forward appeal. Wear it high with tights and a miniskirt or a dress, or fold the top over and pair with skinny jeans for a casually cool look.

Tucson by Corso Como, $270, Two Sole Sisters, 1703 Pearl St., Boulder, 303-442-0404, twosolesisters.com.

Calf-High Boot: Although boots that hit at the calf can be a tricky length, this versatile style works equally well with fall’s narrow pants—like skinny jeans or leggings tucked inside—or with skirts, dresses, and coats that hit just above the knee.

Show off a great set of gams even though summer has passed in a pair of calf-high boots by celeb favorite Fiorentini + Baker. The simple lines keep it chic, but a double-buckle detail and a thick, stacked heel provide just enough biker edge.

Fiorentini + Baker “Andie” double-buckle boot, $485, A.Line Boutique, Village Shops at the Landmark, 5375 Landmark Place, Greenwood Village, 303-773-8200, aline-online.com. (more…)

Designer Lines: Sciapo Shoes at Strut

Monday, October 5, 2009

fi_3aWith the average price of designer shoes topping $500 over the last few seasons, a hot topic of conversation is how to find well-priced, fashionable shoes on a walkable heel.

Leave it to Elyse Burja of Strut to reintroduce Denverites to Italian shoe line Sciapo for fall. Launched in 2002, Sciapo melds traditional Italian handicraft production with contemporary design.

Using the best raw materials and a 200-step process that dates back to the 1920s, a major emphasis is placed on comfort and attention to detail.

This season, the Sciapo collection includes a well-edited selection of pumps, shoe booties, and knee-high boots, but my personal favorite is a dove gray, calf-length boot (pictured) with side frog closures and a wood heel.

With its slightly ‘80s feel, this is a gorgeous alternative to fall’s over-the-knee boot trend (not an easy look to wear) and pairs well with a jersey dress or even a denim pencil skirt.

What to Wear From Ralph Lauren in Denver Next Spring

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

rl-sp10-look-1rl-sp10-look-5

The “It” Factor for Denver: Ralph Lauren’s brand of all-American style always translates well at retail, and next season, women will flock to Lauren for simple, chic clothing. Looks—such as a white organdy, racer-back tank under a transparent jacket paired with narrow, peg-leg pants or a pair of  silk charmeuse trousers with a button-down workshirt that conveys the feel of vintage denim—are both relaxed and luxe.

The Gist of the Show: In our current economic climate, it almost seems inevitable that at least one fashion designer would look to the Great Depression for inspiration. And, although it took all week, on the last day of the Spring 2010 shows, Ralph Lauren delivered a collection romanticizing the Dust Bowl era.

Some of the clothing is reminiscent of Dorothea Lange’s FSA photographs (fashion trade Women’s Wear Daily even mentions that it “made for interesting and, at times, uncomfortable viewing”), including destroyed, faded, patchwork, and dirty denim.

With menswear influences a major theme in his collection, Lauren polishes off denim overalls, blazers, rolled-cuff jeans, vests, and newsboy caps with feminine ruffled blouses or intersperses his denim looks with calico, floral-print dresses and striped nightshirts. A group of sharply tailored, three-piece, pinstripe suits—complete with ties and pocket chains—looks natty, if not a little like costumes from a Hollywood epic.

But it was after these opening sections that the real show began: a couple of pretty, indigo-blue cocktail dresses, followed by floaty, white organdy cut into a billowy nightshirt with matching vest, a wispy skirt with a three-quarter-sleeve blouse and vest, and a drop-waisted dress with ruffles at the hem and shoulder. For evening, Lauren turns on his glam quotient with a full-length workshirt dress and overall gown—both in silver lamé.

Spring 2010: Anna Sui’s “It” Factor for Denver

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

anna_sui3The “It” Factor for Denver: Anna Sui’s collections are always upbeat and colorful, with her spring show serving up a fun mix of circus, stripe, plaid, and paisley prints.

Although Denver girls may not wear this bold combination the way Sui brought it together on her runway, any of her well-cut blazers, cool vests, and terrific summer dresses will provide just the right wardrobe boost.

The Gist of the Show: Always a mix-and-match pattern extravaganza at the house of Anna Sui, this season the recent Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement award winner’s trademark look is spot on-trend.

Taking a visit to the Big Top, Sui amps up her look to include a ringmaster jacket with circus-print balloon skirt; a mod, checked jacket and miniskirt suit with Peter Pan collar shirt and paisley-print tie; and three-piece plaid suits, including a trim jacket, vest, print shirt and tie, and cropped pants.

For die-hard Sui fans, of course there are her signature peasant blouses, shift dresses, and killer cutout cowboy boots.

The Runway Fashions Milly Has in Store for Denver Next Spring

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

90581874BG001_Mercedes_BenzThe “It” Factor for Denver: Milly may have attracted legions of female fans for its terrific dresses, but for spring 2010, the line’s 1960s-influenced jackets and outerwear, breezy skirts, and novelty blouses will add some ladylike pizazz to any wardrobe.

The Gist of the Show: Designer Michelle Smith hits many of the seasonal trends this time around–short skirts, high-waisted shorts, minidresses, and sexy swimwear—but with a heavier hand than other contemporary collections.

Her interesting and rather dramatic use of color—chartreuse with violet, pink with olive—as well as beading and oversized jewelry gives her line a more polished air, rather than a casual feel.

Standouts include high-shine satin shorts and minidresses, bejeweled blouses, a fitted sheath with cutout back, and gold, embellished jackets.

Phillip Lim’s “It” Factor for Denver Fashionistas

Monday, September 21, 2009

The “It” Factor for Denver: Women who have discovered Phillip Lim as a great wardrobe resource will find many reasons to shop this designer for spring. Especially appealing are high-waisted shorts and camp shirts, a V-neck sweater over a languid shirtdress, and swingy, pleated, above-the-knee skirts and dresses.

The Gist of the Show: Sticking to a formula that works well for him, Lim’s collection highlights smart wardrobe additions.

His line moves from a bold red jacket tucked into a pair of drawstring pants into key separates, such as cropped pants with wide waistbands, several sleek trench coats and cropped military jackets, a sexy, open-backed vest, and even sequined shorts and a double-breasted coat dress. Although some of the molded-fabric looks seem slightly over-designed, a belted, satin tuxedo jacket and matching cropped pants appear downright chic.

Look for It Locally: MAX, 3039 E. Third Ave., 303-321-4949;
Nordstrom, 2810 E. First Ave., 720-746-2424.

What Denver Women Will Like About Nanette Lepore’s Spring Collection

Monday, September 21, 2009

nanette_lepore2The “It” Factor for Denver: Girls will flock to Nanette Lepore’s easy-to-wear, striped separates, such as a short-sleeve cardigan and tank top; solid, cropped pants; and flouncy, printed shorts and ruffled blouses.

The Gist of the Show: Working her color chops to the maximum this season, Nanette Lepore takes brilliantly hued solids and intersperses them with Monet-inspired floral prints, as well as neon stripes and embroidery.

Several utility-inspired pieces—like cargo shorts and a deep V-neck, sleeveless dress in safari neutrals of olive green and khaki beige—are paired with bright tops or prints, putting a fresh spin on a common look for the season.

Where to Find Michael Kors’ Runway Looks in Denver Next Spring

Monday, September 21, 2009

michael_korsmichael_kors2

The “It” Factor for Denver: Kors is quite possibly the most important all-American sportswear designer working today, and for spring, women will gravitate toward his many variations of sleek, feminine dresses, as well as A-line skirts paired with cutout knits.

The Gist of the Show: Kors usually works a well-heeled, tasteful interpretation of seasonal trends, but this collection is streamlined and sexy, with a 1960s mod feel.

With a watercolor palette of blue, mint green, lavender, and white, punctuated by black and silver metallic, Kors showed shift dresses—many with zippers that wind around the body, and one particularly pretty version sans zips, with flat, origami panels instead—narrow, city shorts paired with belted vests, sleeveless tops draped from hip to hip, dresses cowled at the lower back, and crinkled, taffeta A-line skirts.

Cutouts and transparency are major themes in this line, from cropped tops that expose the midriff or dresses that gave a peak of upper thigh to thinly spun, sheer knits and sweaters with a flash of bare shoulder. Although a group of oversized knits with double arms that tie around the body are tricky, as are some of the cutout dresses that expose too many body parts, a series of sequined cocktail dresses with sheer insets is on-trend and perfect for a summer soirée.

Look for It Locally: Michael Kors (accessories), 3000 E. First Ave., 303-355-6200;

Nordstrom, 2810 E. First Ave., 720-746-2424.

The combinations work in an easy manner that also manages to look pulled together.

What Custo Barcelona Has in Store for Denver Next Spring

Thursday, September 17, 2009

cbThe “It” Factor for Denver: Custo Barcelona’s high-octane mix of color and graphics makes this line fit for a somewhat daring girl.

Because of the transparency of the fabrics, many looks are paired with bra tops and/or swimwear layered underneath, which makes it difficult to know how this collection will work at retail (CB’s press office hints at production adjustments in their media press release), but the swimwear and cover-up looks are sexy, colorful, and fun.

The Gist of the Show: With mix-and-match clothing shaping up to be a major trend for next season, Custo Barcelona’s regular riot of patterns and textures is naturally on point.

For spring, designer Custo Dalmau uses movement and lightness as key concepts in his designs, which play out in sheer fabrics, layers of fringe, cutouts, and brightly colored graphics and patterns—all combined together.

Look for It Locally: The Garment District, 2595 S. Colorado Blvd., 303-757-3371.

Thursday, September 17, 2009

88921024JH009_Y_3_Runway_SpThe “It” Factor for Denver: Count on Y-3 to deliver well-cut jackets and pants every season. From blazers and short bicolor jackets to skinny, ankle-grazing pants or cropped, suspender trousers, Y-3’s staples are effortless.

The Gist of the Show: Yohji Yamamoto’s continuing collaboration with sport giant Adidas is all about showcasing elegant, athletic-meets-fashion apparel, but next summer sees the line preparing for none other than the World Cup.

Separates feature country patches and emblems, as well as a more conceptual series of mesh pieces—inspired by a soccer goal—rendered in cropped pants, T-shirts, and dress overlays.

The netting looks particularly chic when worn as an underpinning—like a white mesh T-shirt beneath a beautiful, black cut-away jacket—or more urban when paired with rompers or leggings.

And a series of ruffled, tank dresses are colorful and upbeat.

Taylor’s very wearable collection of mixed-up separates means her simple T-shirt paired with a print skirt and satin boyfriend jacket should be an easy look to pull off—even in Denver.

The Gist of the Show: Picking up on this season’s relaxed-chic theme, Rebecca Taylor’s spring collection plays with fabric mixes and silhouette shapes. The designer’s usual series of flouncy, floral-print dresses and ruffled blouses is now shown with sharply tailored polka-dot, cropped jackets and high-waisted shorts.

dvfThe “It” Factor for Denver: Famous for her wrap dresses, Diane Von Furstenberg has been working a layered look for some time, and spring ushers in combinations like a canary yellow dress gathered at the waist and worn over a gray T-shirt or an animal-print dress worn under a belted vest.

The Gist of the Show: Von Furstenberg’s brand of boho, hippie chic includes lots of floral and animal prints (of course), macrame dresses, billowy maxis, belted tunics over harem pants, and drop-waist, asymmetrical-hem, tank dresses—all layered over T-shirts or worn under cropped jackets and cardigans. The “It” Factor for Denver: For die-hard Léger girls who were waiting for a new spin on the bandage dress, this season offers experiments with denim, tie-dye, or beaded looks.

The Gist of the Show: Spring 2010 at Hervé Léger is less focused on Beverly Hills curve hugging and more on the Woodstock hippie. Léger’s trademark dresses come in all things boho, including patchwork and destroyed denim; tie-dyed, draped fringe, flirty skirted looks; and even antique beaded numbers.

Spring 2010: DKNY’s “It” Factor for Denver

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

The “It” Factor for Denver: DKNY always serves up a solid offering of classic wardrobe staples with an urban twist. This season’s highlights include printed T-shirt dresses, well-tailored jackets with matching city shorts, and sequined, striped T-shirts with rolled-cuff trousers.

The Gist of the Show: Karan’s collection explores many variations of a floral motif this season. She adds a playful edge to her city separates with a flowery, graffiti scribble on items such as a work blazer and skirt, rolled-cuff pants, and T-shirt dresses. She’s also got a rather drab print version that mixes and matches low-slung shorts and miniskirts with small, floral-print or striped T-shirts.

To round out the collection, Karan works her floral motif into a fun series of colorful, body-skimming dresses done up in sequins. She also includes sport-influenced pieces—already a reoccurring theme for the spring collections—like biker shorts paired with dress and suit looks, a jumpsuit with banded ankle, and her own version of the classic baseball jacket.

Look for It Locally: Saks Fifth Avenue, 2900 E. First Ave., 303-393-6333.

Spring 2010: Lela Rose’s “It” Factor for Denver

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

lela_roseThe “It” Factor for Denver: Although her frocks are favorites for garden and cocktail parties alike, fans of Lela Rose also should seek out casual day looks, such as a short-sleeve, cowl-neck shift, for its relaxed, pulled-together style.

The Gist of the Show: Lela Rose’s well-tailored, ladylike style is her signature, and this season’s collection of skirts embellished with hip panels, softly constructed jackets—some with double lapels— abstract prints cut into elegant tops, and simple, short-sleeve dresses are all pretty and very wearable.

But spring also sees Rose continue to develop more casual, sporty items like a terrific anorak and a color-blocked cardigan. Although there are some design missteps with her formal gowns, Rose’s cocktail looks are strong.
