Elevated Voices

Laura Flanders at The Denver Forum Luncheon on Tuesday

Monday, May 4, 2009

Laura Flanders’ political voice is heard across the nation, from her weekly radio program, RadioNation, to her television show, GRITtv.

Since 1997 Flanders has worked in investigative journalism, writing novels about women in the Bush administration and minorities in journalism. In times of political change, her approach to sifting through political chatter and gathering what is important to activists, newsmakers, and artists has kept her lefty fan base growing.

On Tuesday, join Flanders and The Denver Forum for lunch and a discussion about her latest book, Blue Grit: Making Impossible, Improbable, and Inspirational Change in America.

Tue, May 5, noon

EveyK Grand Opening Party

Thursday, April 30, 2009

With the Cherry Creek boutique EveyK, California girl Evelyn Knuckles found success in identifying and stocking trends that are hot on the more fashion-centric coasts. Knuckles’ sensibilities come through in styles that recall everything from Harlem grunge to Hollywood cocktail attire. That merchandising prowess will now be available in the Lowry Town Center with the opening of a second EveyK spot for Denver.

Celebrate the new store’s opening tonight with appetizers and drinks, while perusing the latest designer garb and mingling with friends during the grand opening party.

Ten percent of sales will benefit the Adam Foote Foundation in their efforts to raise money for at-risk children and families.

Nebbia at the Buell

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

nebbiaPart circus, part play, Nebbia, a Swiss-Canadian theater production that begins a two-night run at the Buell today, combines graceful acrobatics and an imaginative story.

The show, set to an Old World score, follows three villagers, lost in a dense fog (nebbia in Italian). As they search for a way out of the haze, the trio encounters a inventive, multicultural world, where Chinese plates spin atop bamboo poles, Canadian trapeze artists fly through the air, and South American contortionists bend in impossible directions.

Tue-Wed, Apr. 28-29. 7:30 p.m.

Buell Theatre, Speer Blvd. and Arapahoe St., 303-893-4100

$20-$70

Girls-Only Evening Road Ride

Thursday, April 16, 2009

bike1Whether you’re a newbie or an avid road biker, Outdoor Divas’ all-women, road-bike gathering is an opportunity to brush up on your skills. In a casual, half-hour discussion with the Damas, Denver’s all-women cycling team, revisit fundamental road-bike rules (how to signal a turn) and basic bike maintenance (how to blow up a tire).

Then you’ll hit the road. Damas will divide participants by ability level (first-timers, beginners, intermediates, and amateurs) and lead each group on a ride of corresponding difficulty. Cut through the streets of Cherry Creek North, or get on the bike path and head toward the Cherry Creek reservoir.

RSVPs are encouraged (so Outdoor Divas can notify you of a rain delay), and remember to BYOB (bring your own bike–preferably a roadie).

Note: If tonight’s event is canceled, Outdoor Divas will reschedule for Sunday.

6 p.m.

Outdoor Divas Denver, 2717 E. Third Ave., 303-320-3482

Best Theater Bet: Tang Concubines Introduces Action Musical

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

tangWhen it opens tonight at the Buell, Tang Concubines forgoes the song-and-dance routine of the typical Broadway show. Instead, the musical combines martial arts, gymnastics, and award-winning ballet for a new genre of theater, the action musical.

The story, written, directed, and produced by Denver resident Dr. Dennis Law (Terracotta Warriors and Heaven & Earth), follows two Chinese women as they fight for an emperor’s love and the chance to rule the Tang dynasty. And in the dramatic action-musical style, the tale comes to life with lavish kimono costumes, a colorful palace setting, and acrobatics on par with those of Cirque du Soleil.

Apr 7-19. Tue-Fri 8 p.m.; Sat 2 p.m., 8 p.m.; Sun 2 p.m., 7:30 p.m.

Buell Theatre, Speer Blvd. and Arapahoe St., 303-893-4100

$20-$90

Best Music Bet: Songwriter Ari Hest at Soiled Dove Tonight

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

ari-hestLooking for a break from the standard record-industry rigmarole, acoustic folk rocker Ari Hest spent 2008 apart from production circles, making music for his fans. Each week of the year, the New York-based artist released a new song via his website “52″.

One week, his fan club heard thoughtful lyrics about dead-end living, and the next, it listened to colorful descriptions of East Coast lakes. Over the year, Hest’s followers picked their favorites, and the songwriter has compiled them into the digital album “Twelve Mondays.”

When Hest takes the stage tonight at the Soiled Dove, he is likely to draw on this candid album, just released in March, providing a live show that’s equally as much guitar melody as it is well-crafted storytelling.

Wed, Apr. 1, 8 p.m.

The Soiled Dove Underground, 7401 E. First Ave., 303-366-0007

$12-$18
