For about a year now, a plan has been in place to make downtown Denver’s 16th Street Mall more “vibrant and successful” for the generation to come.
“This project will be more than a makeover of the mall,” Cassie Milestone, urban planning manager for the Downtown Denver Partnership, says (in a statement via the Denver Business Journal).
“Ultimately, it will integrate place making, economic development, universal access, historic preservation, and other components to create a space that will be sustainable economically and environmentally for the next 25 years.”
Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects LLP of Portland, Oregon, has been picked to develop a design that will include a makeover that runs to the core of the mall, including its infrastructure. (more…)

The footwear statement for fall 2009 is the boot. From sexy and thigh-grazing to just-ankle-high, boots are the perfect accent to this season’s streamlined silhouettes. We’ve scoured Denver for the best options available this month:
Over-The-Knee Boot: The urban-warrior look found its match in the over-the-knee boot, but the tan, suede Tucson (right) by Corso Como leaves its basic-black cousins in the dust.
With a wearable heel and gel inserts in the footbeds, this boot is made for walking, while sleek styling shows off its fashion-forward appeal. Wear it high with tights and a miniskirt or a dress, or fold the top over and pair with skinny jeans for a casually cool look.
Tucson by Corso Como, $270, Two Sole Sisters, 1703 Pearl St., Boulder, 303-442-0404, twosolesisters.com.
Calf-High Boot: Although boots that hit at the calf can be a tricky length, this versatile style works equally well with fall’s narrow pants—like skinny jeans or leggings tucked inside—or with skirts, dresses, and coats that hit just above the knee.
Show off a great set of gams even though summer has passed in a pair of calf-high boots by celeb favorite Fiorentini + Baker. The simple lines keep it chic, but a double-buckle detail and a thick, stacked heel provide just enough biker edge.
Fiorentini + Baker “Andie” double-buckle boot, $485, A.Line Boutique, Village Shops at the Landmark, 5375 Landmark Place, Greenwood Village, 303-773-8200, aline-online.com. (more…)

Macerich Co. has sold a 75 percent stake in the FlatIron Crossing Mall in Broomfield to GI Partners, a private firm, for $116 million. It’s the second mall Macerich has opened to joint venture in recent weeks and one of three such deals in the works, according to The Wall Street Journal, as the company struggles with its debt.
“FlatIron Crossing is an opportunity to not only create a strategic partnership, but also secure an ownership position in an asset with significant fundamental value and upside potential,” Rick Magnuson, GI Partners’ executive managing director, says in a news release (via Boulder’s Daily Camera).
Anita Ward, a spokeswoman for Macerich, anticipates few changes at the mall, which opened in 2000 as an indoor/outdoor shopping experience. The mall has been a boon to Broomfield, generating about 9.4 percent of its tax revenue. But the mall also lost anchor Lord and Taylor in 2005 and still wants to redesign the space to accommodate retailers.
FlatIron may not be as shiny new as the mixed-used Orchard Town Center off 136th Avenue and I-25, but it’s certainly not in such dire straights as exclusively indoor developments like the decimated Westminster Mall, as we point out in an article from the latest edition of 5280.

“MALL REMAINS OPEN.” That was the notice on the Park Meadows Mall website Thursday, writes the Denver Business Journal, as the mall’s owner, General Growth Properties Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The mall is now part of the largest real estate bankruptcy filing in U.S. history as General Growth, which owns and manages more than 200 malls and other developments across the nation, is mired in debt.
“All day-to-day operations and business of all of the company’s shopping centers and other properties will continue as usual,” GGP said in a statement. The company also owns Southwest Plaza in Littleton, Foothills Mall in Fort Collins, and Chapel Hills Mall in Colorado Springs, according to The Denver Post.
The company’s bankruptcy follows its failed effort to refinance debt in the collapsing credit market, according to the Northern Colorado Business Report. The big stores, like Macy’s, have struggled too in recent months. The Macy’s that closed in Colorado Springs six weeks ago has left former employee Mo Orosco still trying to find work, according to the Gazette.

At only 26 years old and a mere three years in business, designer Jason Wu is already at the forefront of American fashion.
Recently thrust into the international spotlight for designing Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown, Wu received the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award for Women’s Ready-To-Wear in January 2008, and he was a Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund award finalist in July 2008.
With all this attention, it’s no wonder Denver boutique Lawrence Covell is thrilled to begin carrying Wu’s line this season–the only store in the state to do so.
Wu’s polished and feminine spring collection features familiar silhouettes (cuffed walking shorts, A-line skirts, sheath dresses) cut in colorful, luxurious fabrics like silk, organza, and chiffon.
Visit Covell for a well-edited representation of Wu’s collection, including a hemstitched black organza skirt and an emerald green chiffon dress with fan detail (pictured).

The boyfriend jacket popped up on designer runways last spring and has been on the fashion radar ever since. But this season the trend is everywhere, from the catwalks of Jil Sander, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Stella McCartney to contemporary collections by Jill Stuart and Rebecca Taylor.
The key to this functional wardrobe addition is the fit: A boyfriend jacket should be slightly slouchy, not oversized and sloppy.
At Sarah boutique, a good-looking version by Fillmore in pale gray will look perfect with a pair of favorite skinny jeans, over a sheath dress, or, for the more fashion forward, paired with cuffed shorts and a cool T-shirt.

If you can’t buy local, buying small and supporting the little guy is second best. Foodzie, a new Boulder-based website, has cropped up to help foodies do just that.
The gourmet site functions as an online marketplace for mom-and-pop food companies–think artisan cheese, chocolates, olive oil, and the like–while helping the fledgling vendors gain traction in a cut-throat industry.
Currently, 26 companies from around the country peddle their goodies on Foodzie, including local faves Teatulia Teas, Boulder Popcorn, Seth Ellis Chocolatier, and Black Forest Bison.
Best of all, prices are reasonable and the products are top-notch.

Don’t fear, Denverites. The Macy’s at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center is safe. But 11 other stores around the country, including two in Colorado, will be closed, Macy’s Inc. announced yesterday.
The store at the Westminster Mall and another at The Citadel in Colorado Springs are considered to be under-performing and will be shuttered. Both opened in the mid-1980s and employ more than 100 people, notes the Denver Business Journal.
The Westminster store weathered “double-digit losses for years,” according to The Denver Post, although other businesses in the mall relied on its foot traffic, including Pet City, where a manager in a desolate corridor notes, “we’re at a dead end now.”
Same-store sales at Macy’s were down 4 percent overall in December, with the company citing “the most challenging economic environment in memory,” according to The Wall Street Journal. Clearance sales at the stores begin next week.

After a year obsessed with all things bacon, Serious Eats recommends the smoky treat for holiday gifts, like bacon-focused cookbooks, bacon T-shirts, even bacon DIY gifts.
If you’re still checking off your shopping list, consider dropping by Tony’s Meats for Colorado Sausage Factory’s locally smoked applewood bacon, Whole Foods for a Vosges Haute Chocolate Mo’s Bacon Bar (a milk chocolate bar seasoned with applewood smoked bacon and alderwood smoked salt), or Savory Spice Shop for curing salts and maple sugar to make your own bacon.

Designer stilettos and leather boots can drain a bank account quickly. But not if you shop at Samantha Castilla Shoe Boutique.
Each week, the Cherry Creek North shop knocks 40 percent off the price of select kicks for its “Shoe of the Week” program. This means that every seven days a girl can score a different pair of shoes (think eggplant mid-calf boots by Sigerson Morrison or even Christian Lacroix’s peep-toe pumps) for usually hundreds of dollars less than the ticket price.

This year, stuff Fido’s stocking with something he won’t want to bury in the backyard. No. 242 Collection offers a series of high-end jewelry lines for dogs and their owners.
Dressed in a handmade sterling silver collar and leash, your pup will outshine all the others in the neighborhood, and when you put on a matching necklace, you’ll up the stakes for dog-walking fashion.
No. 242 Collection, which was created by Denver jewelry mavens Carla Wright and Lance Frey, sells classic styles, such as a chain link necklaces and leashes, as well as more edgy designs like the barbed line, which mimics a barbwire fence. Our favorite is the cuff collection, studded with black and white diamonds.
