How Denver Rates for Dating During a Recession

Thursday, August 20, 2009

cover_smallDenver is getting more kudos for being a decent city for singles. You may recall that Forbes magazine recently ranked Denver No. 13 in overall date-worthiness, taking into account a diverse array of hot spots, including the Denver Art Museum and East Colfax dive bars with hipster jukeboxes.

Now Match.com says we’re 12th in terms of dating during a recession, and while that’s about average, at least we’re affordable. The online dating service analyzed the prices of a casual dinner and a pair of movie tickets in 25 cities across the nation.

In the No. 1 cheapest city, Pittsburgh, the cost is about $78. In Los Angeles, the most expensive, it’s about $126, notes the Denver Business Journal. Match doesn’t provide the cost of a date in Denver, but we’ve paid a lot of attention to dating here at 5280, as well other ways to derive some Cheap Thrills in the city.

How Denver Rates for Singles

Thursday, July 30, 2009

spread_singles_sNobody is saying that dating in Denver is easy. But when it comes to the cities in which you might—just might—have a chance at finding true, lasting love, Denver isn’t such a bad shot.

Taking into account potential date spots like the Denver Art Museum and PS Lounge (a mainstay dive bar with a great jukebox on East Colfax), Forbes magazine ranks Denver No. 13 in the nation for finding singles.

In addition to a decent nightlife, Denver’s relatively low cost of living and its coolness factor (ranked 20th) also play into Forbes’ decision.

Westword assesses the Forbes data in typically irreverent fashion. But for all the optimists out there, 5280 recently took a look at being “Single in the City.”

Want to get out there? Try any of the five singles-related events happening this week (via 5280.com).

Rawr! Why Cougars Are Increasingly Getting Their Claws into Young Men

Friday, May 29, 2009

It’s not news that modern life for women like Christine Spuehler, who once thought she’d marry, have kids, and live happily ever after, is more fun than the “Mrs. Robinson” generation. Three years after divorce, the 44-year-old Castle Rock blonde lounges at Elway’s bar in a slinky dress and sexy heels, meeting, from time to time, interesting younger men–some 10 or 20 years her junior.

While  The Denver Post’s journey into cougar country didn’t turn up much we didn’t already know, it did put some interesting demographics to the trend. There are about 14.8 million single women between the ages of 35 and 54 in the United States, up from 13.4 million in 2000. Also, on average men tend to wait to get married until the age of 28 (compared with age 23 in 1970).

Can’t get a date (or would you rather enjoy the carnage vicariously)? You guessed it–here comes a new reality show called “The Cougar,” notes  CBS’ Early Show.

“What’s Your Credit Score?” Becomes the New “What’s Your Sign?” for Recession Singles

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

It seems that love is as much a matter of the heart as the pocketbook. As the recession wears on, some singles are looking at their partners’ credit scores to gauge their date-ability, reports 7News. Some singles are even willing to post their verified credit scores on websites. Still, a Match.com survey found that 71 percent of singles would date someone who lost their job.

Of course, the smarties go back to school and change careers when their industry is downsized. Even community colleges are seeing an upswing in enrollment for classes such as child development and information technology, according to The Denver Post.

But be careful, singles. You might incur student loans, a problem for many Americans, according to BusinessWeek, which was inspired to write about Facebook’s “Cancel Student Loan Debt to Stimulate the Economy” page after hearing from an apparently un-datable Colorado reader who took out $45,000 in student loans, went into default, and now owes $170,000.

Online dating: To Reboot, or Just Give It the Boot?

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Long ago, back when the “Internet” might have referred to a second-rate tennis league, whenever I’d head out for a guys’-night, bar-hopping trek, I’d often think: Maybe tonight’s the night it’ll all come together. I’ll turn the corner, and there she’ll be, the woman of my dreams.

Such is the naivety of youth. Successive failed relationships have let cynical reality intrude. My ideal has proven unattainable, and my romantic resolve has slowly crumbled as I’ve wondered if maybe I’ll have to settle for someone close enough.

Or so I’ve thought until recently, when I began to re-evaluate my love life in terms of online dating. (more…)

Fish Out of Water: A Metrosexual’s Lament

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Last week, my story teaser implied that this week I might reveal the secrets to finding love in Denver. The truth is, two-plus years after arriving here from California, I’m still seeking that first enduring connection.

Seriously ladies, what gives? In this allegedly stellar dating city–where cougars and snow bunnies supposedly run wild–so far my schtick just ain’t flying. Part of it might be the unusual circumstances of my arrival. Unlike so many transplants, I came to Colorado for a job, not because I yearned to sprint up or ski down the sides of fourteeners. Yes, the mountains are gorgeous and inspiring, but I’m a city guy at heart, with hair products, leather jackets, and too many shoes to count.

When I lived on the West Coast, I met a lot of women. A. Lot. Of. Women. Here, I’m just some urban nancyboy who doesn’t speak mogul. A theory: Despite all the demographic research that suggests Denver is singles heaven, our lovely landscape so dominates the culture that it actually makes dating more difficult. (more…)

Celebrity crush: Sting. And I still have that crush. He’s hot, a philanthropist, does yoga and tantra, and loves his wife.

Nickname:
Ducks. I love ducks because they mate for life. I think.

Biggest Influence: The places I’ve lived–Colorado particularly–have influenced so many of my interests. I’m pretty outdoorsy now. I’ve run several marathons, raced 24 hours of Moab on mountain bike, climbed fourteeners. But my New York City side still begs for a bed over a sleeping bag. (more…)
