A Windy Deal for Tri-State Customers

wind-turbine-with-cowsWind is so prevalent on Colorado’s Eastern Plains that North Carolina-based Duke Energy Corp. is going to build a wind farm there to supply electricity for Colorado’s second-largest power supplier. The 51-megawatt Kit Carson Windpower Project–34 wind turbines on 6,000 acres of leased land near Burlington–will feed Tri-State Generation and Transmission, according to the Denver Business Journal, helping Tri-State achieve a goal of moving away from pollution-heavy coal.

The change will not affect rates for customers, reports the Fort Collins Coloradoan, which notes that renewable-energy activists are happy about the news. Duke, which already owns two wind farms in Wyoming, also announced yesterday that it plans to purchase a wind farm about 95 miles east of Pittsburgh, according to The Associated Press.

Renewable energy has brought hundreds of jobs to Colorado, and more are on the way, as this list highlighting the industry’s growth shows (via 9News).
