Prior to the start of the NHL season, it was thought that the oft-injured Peter Forsberg might take another run at hockey in the United States.
Forsberg, a Colorado Avalanche legend and widely believed to be one of the top hockey players to ever lace up skates, may play for a Russian team this year, reports The Denver Post. The Ak Bars Kazan offered Forsberg a large contract to play in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League.
The Post notes that Forsberg is also being pursued by several NHL teams, including the Avalanche, but the Philadelphia Flyers are more likely to land Forsberg’s talents, and the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens are also in the mix. The Avalanche seem to be fine without him, leading the Northwest Division by four points and posting a record of 10-3-2 heading into tonight’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes.
Key to the success has been goalie Craig Anderson, whom USA Today has named among its clutch players for October. He’s also winning attention as a possible goalie for the U.S. Olympic team, according to ESPN, which reports that Anderson was snubbed for the U.S. orientation camp in August but was named the NHL’s first star in October.
