How the Nuggets Rank So Far This Season

Anthony, Carmelo_2It’s got to be tough for New Jersey Nets fans these days, especially after the Denver Nuggets handed them their 14th consecutive loss last night at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets’ 101-87 win keeps the Nets winless so far this year, with Nets coach Lawrence Frank telling New Jersey’s Star-Ledger that his team was embarrassed by the Nuggets.

Thankfully, the Nuggets are on the other end of the stats so far this season. Forward Carmelo Anthony continued his lights-out play last night, scoring 27 points. The Associated Press points out that Anthony (right) remains the league’s top scorer and has hit at least 20 points during every game this season, the only player in the NBA scoring at that pace.

But Melo hasn’t been doing it alone. Bleacher Report calls center Nene the unsung hero of the Nuggets, which might be a slight stretch, although we shouldn’t downplay the 6-foot-11 Brazilian’s contribution to the team. He added 17 points last night and proved once again that he can score at will as long as he drives to the hoop strong. Opposing players have to either get out of the way and watch like the rest of us, or foul the big man hard.

The Nuggets are among the best in a Western Conference stacked deep with good teams. ESPN puts Denver at number 5 on its power rankings, noting Anthony’s pure dominance and the fact that he’s scoring more than nearly a point every minute he plays.
