A Few Good Reasons to Watch College Hockey This Season

Cheverie, MarcLost amidst the Colorado Avalanche’s surprisingly great play are Colorado’s college hockey teams, but any true hockey fan overlooks the college teams at their own risk. Colorado College enters Friday’s home Western Collegiate Hockey Association series, versus Alaska-Anchorage, tied for first place, notes the Colorado Springs Gazette.

A key reason for their rank is team captain Mike Testwuide, a senior from Vail who leads by example with a strong work ethic and six goals on the season so far. Team coach Scott Owens says Testwuide’s play has rubbed off on team assistant captains Nate Prosser and Bill Sweatt. Prosser has a goal and eight assists, and Sweatt has racked up 19 points with eight goals.

Meanwhile, the University of Denver Pioneers are off to a great start, fueled by the dominant play of goalie Marc Cheverie (right). The Denver Post points to Cheverie’s lead in every major NCAA statistical goaltending category, noting that he’s on pace to rewrite DU’s single-season and career goals-against averages and save-percentage records.

The Post puts DU at the top of the Front Range power rankings, with an overall record of 8-3-1, and Cheverie’s play has him on track to be a top NHL draft pick next year. Colorado College comes next with a record of 9-2-1 and is ranked fifth in the nation. Air Force pulls up the rear with a record of 6-5-3, although the team is enjoying a seven-game winning streak.
