From the comfort of hurricane-less Fort Collins, Colorado State University professors Phil Klotzbach and William Gray have issued their annual forecast for the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season.
The worst-case scenario for next year would be as many as five “intense” hurricanes with winds as fast as 111 miles per hour (via The Baltimore Sun).
The low end of their 2010 projection is three hurricanes, still more than the 2.3 hurricanes seen on average. With six months to go until hurricane season, the team is predicting up to 16 named storms in all.
A CSU news release notes the professors say there’s a 64 percent chance that at least one of the major hurricanes will make landfall on a coastline in the Atlantic Basin; the probability for the East Coast, including the Florida Peninsula, is 40 percent.
