Jefferson County’s school district is facing up to $40 million in cuts over the next two years, while dealing with declining enrollment at some schools and crowding at others.
After tense public meetings, a 30-member committee studying details such as capacity use, operating costs, and enrollment trends, has issued a working draft that places 11 schools up for closure—schools that tend to be in lower-income, minority areas, according to The Denver Post.
The schools are Arvada, Carmody, Ken Caryl, and O’Connell middle schools, as well as Fitzmorris, Foster, Martensen, Pennington, Pleasant View, Russell, and Zerger elementary schools.
The committee is expected to meet today and finalize recommendations for the 85,00-student district. The school board will review the recommendations in January, as parents and public officials continue to rally to prevent the schools from going to the chopping block. Meanwhile, Wheat Ridge’s City Council may issue a proclamation against the plan.
