We tell you what to do, where to be, and why for each week of the year

THEATER

What: The one-woman show Asking For It tells the story of Bernadette O’Connell, a bubbly Irish Catholic girl caught between her church mentality and the wild life of big cities and dirty dancing.

Why: Tony Award nominee and director Lynne Taylor-Corbett teams with Nora Mae Lyng and Abigail Buell, producers of the acclaimed HATS!, to present this regional premiere.

Bonus: The one-week show coincides with the National Performing Arts Convention, taking place this week. To check out other special NPAC shows, visit www.performingartsconvention.org/performances.cfm.

Details: Wed-Sat 8 p.m. New Denver Civic Theatre, 721 Santa Fe Dr. $35. For more information, call 303-309-3773 or visit www.denvercivic.com.

BENEFIT

What: In a gala of grand scale, the Colorado chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association presents the Alzheimer’s Art Auction.

Why: The auction’s array of art includes originals from Alzheimer’s patients, donated works from professional artists like John Fielder, and unique paintings from Colorado and New York artists.

Bonus: No sit-down dinner or long-winded speakers will slow this evening. Instead, the concert master of the Denver Philharmonic and two musicians will accompany this social dinner, catered by Epicurean.

What: Holding true to its diverse programming, Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret puts the burlesque shows and drag queen divas on hold for the night to present folksy Fort Collins rockstar Jeff Finlin.

Why: Bruce Springsteen is a Finlin fan, and director Cameron Crowe used Finlin’s “Sugar Blue” in his movie Elizabethtown.

Bonus: Dig deeper into Finlin’s persona and background in 5280‘s “Ballad of a Plain Man” by Pulitzer Prize winner J.R. Moehringer.

Details: Fri 8 p.m. Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, 1601 Arapahoe St. $20. For more information, call 303-293-0075 or visit www.lannies.com.
