South Suburban DA Fight Gets Personal

Newly elected Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers has started her tenure with a bitter public fight with the county commissioners of the four counties (Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln) that make up her district. The fight started when the commissioners of the four counties voted to set Chambers' salary at $120,000, nearly $30,000 less than her predecessor, and also ordered that she would receive no cost of living increases. Chambers accused the commissioners of playing politics, saying most of them backed her opponent in the recent election. The commissioners responded that Chambers should make less money because she lacks experience in the job. Now Chambers says under that logic, the salaries of incoming county commissioners should also be cut, because they also lack experience. If this spat is setting the tone for Chambers' term as DA, we can expect a lot more fireworks. Stay tuned.
