Denver to Consider Marijuana Initiative Monday

On Monday, August 22, the Denver City Council will hold a hearing to discuss the Alcohol-Marijuana Equalization Initiative, which would remove criminal penalties for adult marijuana possession. Supporters of the initiative would like people to call their council member. They suggest the following comment:
"I support the Alcohol-Marijuana Equalization Initiative because I think that prosecuting responsible adults who use marijuana is a waste of taxpayer dollars and law enforcement resources. I hope that you will support the initiative too. Thank you for your time."
If you don't know who your councilperson is, you can find out here. You might also telephone the two at-large members and the council president.

Ron, it sounds as if you have been spending too much time on websites like the antidrug.com, NIDA, or crackstreet, and not thinking with a sense of reason. If the possession of up to one ounce of pot were decriminalized for persons 21 years of age and older, valuable tax dollars and police resources could be allocated to better serve and protect our beloved city of Denver. For those of us who do not hang out on "Crack Street," the most dangerous person we will most likely encounter is one who is drunk and belligerent, oftentimes blacked out and incapable of remembering any events that may transpire. These individuals, not potheads, are threatening your wellbeing; therefore, the "real life" effect of passing this initiative would be to offer responsible adults an alternative to alcohol, not give dealers an air of invincibility. Also, Ron, slavery was once legal. It took grassroots political activism to change that too.

Hopefully you potheads do NOT live in Capitol Hill or other neighborhoods known for drug dealing -- see www.crackstreet.com -- before you think this is such a great idea and a matter of freedom. If pot is legal, it likely will become an increasingly favorite merchandise item among sellers/buyers because the buyers believe that no one can touch them. Sure, let this go to a ballot initiative, that's the right of anyone who obtains X signatures. But think twice, especially when pot is against all federal laws that supercede a meaningless initiative (even if passed) anyhow.
