Best Bets for February 1

I'm going to Disney World!... Alas, your kids won't see Jake Plummer shouting the magic phrase on Super Bowl Sunday, but that's no reason for them (or you) to miss out on the weekend fun. Help 'em get their game faces on at Kids Bowl I, an all-day sporting event at the Wildlife Experience interactive museum, featuring a quarterback toss, a free throw contest, a scavenger hunt, putt-putt, and more. Broncos shmonchos. At least your kids will walk away feeling like champs. Sat 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Wildlife Experience, 10035 South Peoria, Parker. Tickets $4.95-$7.95. For more information, call 720-488-3300 or visit www.thewildlifeexperience.org. No Skis Required...You don't have to be a ski bum to celebrate the snow. The 93rd annual Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs is a frenzy of nontraditional festivities, including the Saturday night Extravaganza, complete with fireworks and the infamous "Lighted Man," who will hit the slopes adorned in over 200 lights and equipped with Roman candles. For the cost of one official carnival button (only $7), you can partake in all five days of the longest running winter carnival west of the Mississippi. Wed-Sun, event times vary. Steamboat Springs. For more information, call 970-879-0880 or visit www.steamboatchamber.com. Speaking Sharpton...Celebrating Black History Month has never been more important at CU-Boulder, as pressure mounts for the university to address recent racist incidents on campus. Who better to lead this touchy discussion than social justice activist Reverend Al Sharpton? CU's administration has been criticized for skirting the issue, but lord knows Sharpton won't skirt anything. Wed 7 p.m. Glenn Miller Ballroom, University of Colorado at Boulder. Free and open to the public. Free Education...Who said there's no such thing? This week the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science are welcoming the public free of charge. So tell your boss you need a study break and leave your wallet at home to peruse the wildlife or take an afternoon space odyssey. Denver Zoo, 2300 Steele St. Thu 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Denver Museum of Nature and Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. Wed 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, visit www.denverzoo.org or www.dmns.org. The Shakespeare You Didn't Read... Sure you know Hamlet, Romeo, Othello, and the rest of the usual suspects, but here's your chance to meet the lesser-known inhabitants of Shakespeare's imagination in the Denver Center Theatre Company's devilish comedy "Measure for Measure." Set in Vienna, a town gone tawdry, the straight-laced Angelo is entrusted by Duke Vincentio to clean things up. But clearing out brothels and jailing the pimps just leads to more scandal as Angelo discovers his own treacherous desires. Through Feb. 25, show times vary. The Stage Theatre, 1050 13th St. Tickets $34-$50. For more information or tickets, call 303-893-4100 or visit www.denvercenter.org.
