Aspen Cop Fired Over Taser Incident

Last month I wrote about Aspen police officer Melinda Calvano who tasered a homeless woman in Aspen while she was sitting on the ground. The woman was suspected of stealing a sweater from a thrift shop. As you can see, the post generated a lot of comments, initially because it found its way onto a police message board. The officers who responded were angry, to put it mildly. The Aspen Times now reports that the investigation has concluded and Officer Calvano has been fired from the police force.

In a July 27 memo to Calvano, City Manager Steve Barwick stated: "Your judgment and conduct on that occasion leads me to conclude that you are not suited to be a police officer with the Aspen Police Department. ... [Y]our decision to use a taser on an elderly woman who posed no immediate threat to you, herself, or any one else in the community, displays a complete lack of understanding of the values, philosophy, and mission statement of the Aspen Police Department."

One of the outside officers involved in the investigation thought Calvano should not be "Monday morning quarterbacked."

[Vail Officer Susan] Douglas determined that Calvano had violated two points of police policy (discharging the Taser without another officer present and failing to document the incident sufficiently), she ultimately concluded that the officer was justified in using her Taser in this instance.

Another of the investigating officers saw it differently:

Frisco Police Chief Tom Wickman, who reviewed an Aspen police report on the incident, was not definitive in his evaluation of the incident. Rather, Wickman noted that at several points during the incident, Calvano would have been justified in discharging her Taser - when Alexy raised her walking stick, for instance. But once Alexy was on the ground, he wrote, "The officer can now wait for backup. The incident at this point is stabilized. I cannot understand the reason at this point to use [the Taser]. There is clearly no threat to the officer."

Goodbye, Officer Calvano.

Ok I agree it was slightly harsh for this policewoman to get fired, and I agree in Denver (no cop would ever be alone for too long though) if this homeless woman started acting up her face and body would be on the ground in ten seconds flat---not shot but definitely bruised and banged. On the flipside, who tazors someone for stealing a sweater? Was the sweater that important? Why was the policewoman alone? Were there not any bystanders, i mean the ones who accused the woman of stealing the sweater? How come she was put in hand cuffs? Sounds like a department problem--not just one officer. I wouldve suspended the officer or demoted her position until she proved herself--i would fired her boss

Homeless people are usualy dirty and foul smelling, not to mention disease ridden, and intravenous narcotics users who stash dirty needles on them. Who wants to touch them, let alone wrestle them to the ground? Its time we declared war on the homeless before this place turns into San Francisco.

I agree. Calvano souldn't have been fired. THis seems a bit uncomprehendable concerning the circumstances. THis offcier was alone, without backup at 3 in the morning dealing with a suspect twice the size of her. How many people out there have been in a situation like this? Not may I bet. Everyone who is posting a congrats on the firing of this officer has no clue what they are talking about. DO you know what this officer was feeling? I doubt it. THis suspec thad already threatened her with a weapon. DO you think that after she disarms this person, it makes her no risk...yea right. She was sizing up this officer all along. You people are whacked. You know what would have happened to her in Denver? She probably would have been shot. Transients are the roughest people there are. Don't tell me that you would be inviting them into your home to play with your children. Here she is protecting people like you so you can sleep safe at night, and you have the nerve to say she misused her power. why don't you get a job in law enforcement and then tell me that. You have no freaking clue what these officers due to make you safe. You people disgust me. Maybe you can meditate someone away from you, but that is not how it works in the real world. Get out of your sheltered lives and open you eyes you liberals!

Calvano is a female. Did you even read the article?

That's undoubtedly a fair decision. Calvano deserved it for his cowardly and weird act. Now Goodbye Calvano!!Police department is to help people and not misuse their power, this was what you did.

Jeralyn, That was nice of you to extend your farewell to Officer Calvano. I hope that you do not rely on the police when you need them. You would probably judge the way the helped you. What you "pulled out" of the whole article written on the indicent only shows the points that make the officer look bad. What about sharing with your readers the facts: that the suspect was twice the size of the officer, that she threatened the officer with a weapon, or that the officer was by herself. Oh, and don't forget that the Internal Investigator's conclusion was completely ignored by a know nothing city manager who is too interested in sucking up to the community rather than proecting it. The chief has said that he didn't even want to fire the officer. This whole thing is uncomprehendable to any police officer. If you don't believe me, just ask one. Aspen Police Department has now put itself on the map as a joke department. And you should practice a little on your unbiased reporting. If you can, that is...I doubt it.

Once again, politics and monday morning quarterbacking have claimed another good officer.
