Suthers Goes to Saudi Arabia....to Grovel

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers flew to Saudi Arabia this week. The purpose of his trip: To reassure government officials there that Saudi national Homaidan al-Turki was treated fairly when he was convicted of sexually abusing an Indonesian nanny whom he had held captive in his home in Aurora.

Suthers said he was questioned aggressively by King Abdullah for 3 days about whether Homaidan Al-Turki was treated fairly when he was convicted in Arapahoe County of sexually assaulting an Indonesian maid and keeping her as a virtual slave in his Aurora home. Suthers said Al-Turki comes from an influential religious family in Saudi Arabia and was portrayed in the media there as a victim. "One of the brothers of the defendant that I had met sat through the trial and they simply cannot understand that a jury can give credibility to an Indonesian maid," Suthers said. "And the only possible explanation that is some sort of anti-Muslim bias."

Who picked up the tab for this extravagence?

While the trip was grueling, Suthers said he stayed in the Royal Palace Hotel in a six-room suite. The trip was paid for partly by the U.S. State Department and partly by King Abdullah.

Also along for the ride: Governor Owens' chief counsel, Jon Anderson.

I like to think that people are building these West Indians up, because I'm not really sure they're as good as everyone thinks they are. I think people tend to forget it wasn't that long ago they were beaten 5-1 by the Australians and only just managed to keep their heads above water against the Indians just a short time ago as well. Sure, they've got a couple of fast bowlers, but really I don't think we're going to run into anything more sensational than Thomson and Lillee and so really I'm not all that worried about them. You must remember that the West Indians, these guys, if they get on top are magnificent cricketers. But if they're down, they grovel, and I intend, with the help of Closey and a few others, to make them grovel."

Thanks for posting this, lifted my day

When is the Bush administration going to stop kissing the behinds of the Saudi royal family by doing things like this? They also need to come down on them to close the rotten radical Muslim schools that turn innocent kids into terrorists. Both Bush 41 and Bush 43 have some kind of special relationship with the Saudis, and it is clearly harmful to America. Shame on them!

Groveling? It seems to me he was doing the US State Department a big favor. Al-Turki, the son of a prominent imam, will no longer serve as a credible mascot for anti-American sentiment.

"A measure of Saudi embarassment may be found in the total absence of this story from Saudi newspapers since this Arab News article of November 17th. That story described Suthers' meeting with the defendant's relatives and the Saudi Human Rights Commission. Gee, how many AGs look forward to meeting the relatives of people they convicted away from their home turf, at the total mercy of their hosts, surrounded by people primed to accuse them of violating the defendant's human rights?"
