August Issue: Get It While You Can

Our August DNC issue, featuring a cover illustrated by renowned artist Shepard Fairey, seems well on its way to becoming a collector's item. We're hearing from our newsstand distributors that the issue is already racking up big sales. At one of the area's largest newsstands, nearly half of the copies normally bought in a month were sold in the magazine's first five days on sale. Other retailers are reporting impressive sales as well. Bottom line: Distributors are worried that the August issue may well sell out before the end of the month when the Dems arrive. That's a good problem to have, but consider yourself warned. Get your copy while you still can.

so basically that Westword article says they have a better name then you. How did they get that name?

Sure, I've seen it. Lots of Obama covers on the newsstands these days (Rolling Stone has done two this year). I'm actually glad their's is out there. It'll be good to look at both magazines' sales figures and see whether our great sales were the result of the subject matter alone or our specific execution. As for the Obama interview, I'm not sure I can add anything to what Westword has already said. http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/2008/07/denver_magazine_lands_intervie.php

have you seen the Denver Magazine cover? Do you have an interview like them?

Actually, the article says quite a bit more about the interview. Check it out. As for the name, back when we first started 5280, there had been any number of local magazines that had all gone out of business. The old Denver Magazine failed in 1992. When we started in 1993, most of those old names were still trademarked, so we had to come up with something different. From a marketing perspective, the opportunity to set ourselves apart from all of those failed magazine was a good thing. In retrospect, that was a blessing long-term as well. Five or so years ago, we saw that the trademark on Denver Magazine had lapsed. We thought long and hard about changing names, but eventually realized that our uncommon name was still a good thing. We're not playing to the least common denominator, and we're not trying to be all things to all people. I like that.

The absolute best list for events during the DNC I've run across so far is at http://www.metrohikers.com/dnc_sign_up.html you need to do the free registration for the site, but the event list looks pretty decent and apparently it's updated daily.
