Along Main Street in downtown Carbondale sits the Swiss Gourmet, an airy deli-style shop dishing up fresh European eats. Purchase goods like wild salmon fillets or risotto to go, or order lunch and settle in at a sun drenched table.

Owned by Ron Goth, the well-edited menu includes goods like Italian prosciutto sandwiches, Braunschweiger liverwurst, and Molinari salami. The veal bratwurst, which comes grilled on a bun with two mustards and tangy sauerkraut, tastes light, delicate, and unlike most other sausages. I especially loved the side of zippy Alpine potato salad served on hearts of romaine.
