Cheap Eats: Bernie's Hot Dog Co.
Seven weeks ago, Highlands Ranch resident Joe Zemla and his wife, Su, opened Bernie's Hot Dog Co. in the Highlands Ranch Town Center. The sleek space celebrates the hot dog (choose from traditional, turkey, foot-long, or mini corn dogs) in a Chipotle-esque space.
Order from the board--the Michigan Avenue dog with sport peppers, relish, diced tomatoes, celery salt, and a pickle spear is both traditional and tasty--and watch as the staff plucks your dog from the griddle and dresses it up accordingly. Best of all, you get to select more add-ons (from diced cucumbers to braised sauerkraut) and round out the meal with hot fries or a crunchy salad.
My only complaint: The skimpy amount of guacamole that accompanied my P.C.H. dog (topped with guac, diced tomatoes, and a slice of bacon).

Bernie's has the best coney dogs around and Su's chili is wonderful! The owners are great and one of them are always there thanking everyone for coming in. What other business does that these days? It's a great place to go with great food and prices. I've been telling everyone to go try the coney dogs! We will keep going back!

Loved that the kids could get wonderful hot dogs and I could get a fantastic salad. Can’t wait to go back and try more! The pictures of the dogs were taken by the owner and we will bring a picture of our dog to post on the board next time!

For those of you that don't like Bernie's, You're Crazy! I don't know what land you all are in but this is the best dog in town, hands down! The owners are awesome! You tell me where you can go around Highlands Ranch and the actual owners walk around and sincerely tell you thanks for coming in. "styrofoam" "bad for the environment"???????? Give me a break! Go complain about the styrofoam to somebody in your circle...
This place is a keeper in my mind and will be around for a very long time. The new menu and the option of liquor is great changes, but I can't help go back to eating the best hot dog (with Su's chili) in town, and that's at Bernie's!

what?!? now beer! airhead teens serving beer to who? other teens!! really do all you drunks have to have booze everywhere you go? Maybe you should be able to smoke inside too. i guess if you drink enough beers the food MIGHT taste better. so sad that the snobs who have no class (but act like they do) in HR think this is a good anything. Brett you move the front of the boob line drag your overweight butt in and eat some more sub par food have some over priced beer then get on the road. maybe someday you will get out of HR and go to a real city (no not denver) and eat a real restaurant. Until then go ahead and waste your money.

Forgot to add that I have spoke with the owners on multiple occasions. They become very defensive. You can see this in their reply to the gentleman who paid $40 for 4 hot dogs and was upset. The only reasonI have gone more than once is to give them a fair chance. Well I did that and will never go back. ( I don't like that they use styrofoam. It is so bad for the environment. ) I asked them about this and there answer was we have to use that. Ummm, I don't think anyone is forcing them.

We would like to thank everyone for a great first year. We appreciate your business and look for an even better year in 2010.
In case you haven't visited us recently, we now offer Vienna Beef dogs and have been offering Italian Beef as a daily special. We are in the process of completing our new menu and expect to launch it in the next few weeks. The Vienna Beef dogs will remain as our Bernie Dog. The new items will be a Vienna Beef all natural dog, veggie dog and deli sandwiches. The signature salad, spicy Polish sausage and smoked bratwurst will continued to be offered. The new, healthy options will be a nice addition to our menu. We have applied for our liquor license and should have beer and wine available in the next few months.
We are excited to introduce our new menu and look forward to seeing you in 2010.

After reading their review in the local Highlands Ranch newspaper On Friday a.m. and being a newly arrived "New Yawker", I looked forward to having a couple of Dogs and a Cola. What a mistake!
Maybe its that as a former New Yorker, I was exposed to a plethora of great Hot dog stands such as the famous "Katz's Delicatessen" or the "Papaya KIng" in Mahattans "Germantown" or being able to buy the great tasting "Sabrett" brand of beef hot dogs in virtually any supermarket or street vending carts.
I have been unable to find any of these here yet. So my hopes for Bernie's to
provide me a little of the home flavor was highly anticipated.
Bernies' is overpriced...2 dogs and a cola nearly $10.00!!! The skin on the dogs is much to thick, they should offer both grilled or boiled dogs. I found the dogs excessively salty
tasting. The condiment counter looked appetizing enough, but aside from the onions; the relish, chilis' and mustard were entirely too bland. The dogs lacked flavor.
That's the good news... about 2hours after eating them my stomach began to gurgle...fortunately for me I was home and have been quite intimate with my commode since 2pm yesterday. Is Bernies' food the culprit, I believe so as I had nothing to eat prior except juice and coffee. Its now 4:30pm Saturday and I'm still running to the john about 1/2 hour...
Bernies has filled me with a lifetime of memories...never again...

Wow the people who say good things about this place (if they are not posts from the owner) must not have ever tavaled outside colorado and don't know what a good hot dog is!! It's a plus they changed to Vienna dogs, but they alone can't carry this place. too bad they are giving good dogs a bad name. this place is over priced. love the tip jar what class!how much should I tip someone for doing there simple job? With the prices you would think not just the owners were getting paid. The mind numb teen agers are no help and again don't know what good service is. Cute yes, smart no. I've been 3 times and thats 2 times to many. (Has the owner ever worked the line?eaten the food?) As of 1/22 no italian sausage. I was told they just ended up throwing them out. Today the items on the grill had been there over 4 hours.Thats what I was told. the fries are (out of a bag) ok at best! The first 3 tables I went to were dirty as was the floor. I have found a place with better hot dogs with better service and at a real price and its just a short walk. Its in the home depot lot just a very short walk or drive.

Hey ginovino... did you contact anyone at Bernie's and let them know about your visit? I am sure that they would appreciate a call. As a regular patron at Bernie's since my first visit in February, I have never had a bad meal and if I did, I would let someone know while I was there or in your case call the restaurant.

My wife and I just ate there - what were we thinking? The buns were good - dogs / toppings were tasteless. Hot dog stand at Home Depot is far superior.

We stumbled onto Bernie's by accident on our way to the farmer's market and HIP HIP HOOORAY that we did! I was hesitate to try it being that I'm not a big hotdog fan BUT my boys are! I was thrilled to see salads on the menu...fantastic salad...not just on that visit but the repeated times we have been back. Top notch FRESH ingredients! I couldn't find one squishy veggie, brown lettuce, just a big bowl of FRESH people! My hubby and boys LOVED their hotdog's! As for the price...we thought they were very reasonable! Love the atmosphere and one of the friendliest, helpful staff we have had visited in a long time! You would think I am related... we are not...couldn't tell you who this Joe and Su are...but we LOVE 'em and will make the journey out of Littleton to support their business every chance we get!

Went into Bernies with my son last night and had one of the best dogs I can remember and I've been to Coney Island many times as a kid. Also got to meet the owner Joe who can only be described as a Prince. He treated us very kindly which I sorely needed after a hellacious day in front of a computer. Thanks Joe, your the best!

I'm not much of a hot dogger but after having Bernie's catered to our office, I've changed my mind. Bernie's dogs were fresh, light, tasty and had a great little "snap" when I bit into it. All the fixings were nicely packaged and everything was delivered on time. The salad was large and fresh and I loved the salad dressing - viniagrette with a twist I can't quite place. Bernie made the delivery himself and was very friendly and accommodating. Like Shannon (above), I'll be looking forward to our next hot dog party. I think we'll be planning more of them.

Thanks Joe and Su for a wonderful lunch. My whole office raved about it and are anxiously awaiting our next hot dog party! The dogs were awesome, and even more awesome that 1 dog plus bun is only 230 calories...I also tried the salad it was SO good. I am happy to have Bernie's in Highlands Ranch, can't wait to go back. To the people who say spending $8 bucks on a lunch is too much, should be packing their own lunch as that's the goin' rate EVERYWHERE these days....

We have been reading the comments that have been coming in and would like to clarify a few things and respond back.
First of all, we would like to thank everyone for visiting Bernie's. It has been a very busy opening and we are learning a lot about our business every day. Before we opened, we set up a job fair table in front of the store for four weekends to hire our Crew. During that time, other businesses in the center we already open and many people were stopping by to say hi and ask about Bernie's. At that time, we would get their email and would send out periodic updates. One of these updates was an email letting everyone know about this article on 5280. Needless to say, there were many comments sent back in that day or shortly after. Some of these were friends, but the majority were from people that have now become regulars at Bernie's. We noticed that the last few comments are assuming that they are bogus comments, but that is not the case.
There has also been some negative feedback regarding our prices. We have priced our menu based on competitive market prices. For example, we charge $2.99 for our Bernie Dog. It is a high quality, traditional "snap" hot dog that we have shipped in from Michigan. A hot dog at Steve's is $3.15, Fatburger $2.99, Mustard's Last Stand $3.51, Chicagos $3.22. Our add on toppings are also very competitive. Our homemade chili and various cheeses are $.49 each while Steve's charges $.35 for cheese and $.55 for chili, Fatburger $.69 for each, Mustard's $.66 each and Chicagos $.89 each.
The last comment says that he spent $40 on lunch for a family of four. Unfortunately, he was not happy with that amount. If he did not want to spend that much, maybe he should have taken advantage of our Family 4 Pack that is advertised in the store and costs only $20. This pack includes four Bernie dogs with up to any four toppings each or two Bernie dogs with an entree salad, fries, two drinks and two kid's meals which includes a Bernie dog, fries and drinks. We also offer daily specials. Today it is a footlong spicy Polish sausage, chips and a drink for $7.99.
We hope this comment helps to clarify a few things and we ask that anyone that is not happy with their experience notify someone at Bernie's immediately. This would give us a chance to help make things right on the spot. One of us a almost always in the shop. That is one of the benefits of being a locally owned and operated business.
Thanks for reading and we hope to see everyone soon.

I tried Bernies Hotdogs base on all the great reviews and I would have to say I was not impressed at all. I question who is providing all the wonderful comments...the owners friends??? The chili wasn't as great as the raves posted by others and I thought for what I received it was expensive. I know that they are trying to do the Detroit Coney but the biggest difference is that it is twice the price in highlands ranch as in Detroit. If I want another hotdog I will stick to my own grill.

I wasn't that impressed. I had the green chili on my hot dog and it didn't have much taste. My husband had the coney chili and he said it didn't have much taste either. It wasn't very hot either. Should be hot enough to where the shredded cheese melts on the chili, but it didn't melt at all. The only thing we liked were the fries. With all the great comments, we expected better. I think we expected more gourmet maybe, but got a small hotdog with chili that didn't add anything to it. Maybe it was an off night or something.

Tried Bernies with my family for lunch. The price is insane that it was almost $40 for my family of 4. The hot dogs were nothing special. I agree with #18 Brenda & #21 Cally, appears the owners have some friends posting reviews. I also don't agree with the title - cheap eats. Yeah right, for lunch and the type/quality of the food I don't consider it cheap at all.

I have been reading the comments and decided to drive down (16.5 miles) yesterday for lunch. I needed to see if this place deserves the hype. Truth is, it deserves more. This is the best new place I have been to in a very long time. I had an 8 mile (Detroit style coney), spicy polish with diced cucumbers and tomatoes, chili cheese fries and a tea. The dogs were fresh off the grill not held in some water bath and the buns are steamed. There have been some comments on the chili and it is perfect (no beans- thank you). Finally a place that also serves cheese sauce with great chili on crispy fries. Needless to say, I loved my lunch. I have never found a hot dog restaurant with great dogs, sausages paired with a huge variety of really fresh toppings that I can point to and order. I loved the decor as well. It is clean and fun and goes great with the tunes and video playing in the place. I know there are other hot dog joints closer to home, but they don't come close to my new found favorite. Now I can only hope that they build one in Denver. Thanks to 5280 for featuring Bernie's.

I recently ate at Bernies it wasn't terrible, but it was mediocre, the sport peppers were not spicy and the atmosphere seemed watered down (a little too much like highlands ranch)

I haven't had a hot dog in 3 years. The only Hotdogs available to me were from the 7/11 rollers, and the trailer outside Home Depot.
Bernies has great dogs... The Michagen Ave. is definitely my favorite, along with some chili cheese fries and a salad.
The staff is great! I walked in and was greeted automatically, and given a "Low down on the Showdown" they called it, on the menu. They are all very friendly, and I can't wait to go back.

Best Hot Dogs I've EVER had!! I love how as you walk up to the door you can already hear the great music playing from the speakers they put out front. The best hot dog toppings combination so far is cream cheese and jalapenos. The staff is great! They always welcome you and make sure to thank you for coming in as you leave. Plus...they have the real thing...Coney Chili WITHOUT beans!!!!!

Went to Bernies last week and it was okay. Seemed like a knock off of Steve's Snapping dogs on Colfax which is still my pick for the best dog. You should consider doing a reveiw though on their burgers because they are half the price of Rodneys or the Crickets and taste better in my opinion.

Stopped for dinner at Bernie's last night. Awesome place! Best chili dogs I've had since I lived in New Jersey twenty years ago. Then I find out from the owner that the chili is homemade... heaven. My wife had the Signature Salad and can't stop talking about it. That is a salad you would expect to get at a fine dining restaurant not a hot dog place. The Kid's Meal was a bargain at three bucks. All of this along with plasmas showing the Lakers' game and Yogi Bear and great tunes jamming in the restaurant and patio. Great food, great staff, cool decor and atmosphere. These guys have taken the hot dog joint to new heights and we are going back tomorrow for lunch.
