Though often relegated to the middle school lunchroom, I rate a well-made Frito pie at the top of the cozy scale alongside mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. And so, on a recent blustery afternoon, I ordered the dish at Mr. Lucky’s Sandwiches.

Inside the tiny Sixth Avenue shop I discovered a hearty recipe of made-from-scratch chili topped with crunchy Fritos, freshly grated cheddar, leaf lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Each bite of the comfy combo tastes just like childhood.
