Yesterday morning, a group of former Rocky Mountain News journalists announced a plan to keep their ink-stained craft alive in the digital era: a website called InDenverTimes that proposes a unique business model for news at a time when newspapers are struggling to survive (via 7News). It could be a resurrection for the Rocky, which was shuttered last month, leaving The Denver Post as the sole large newspaper in the Denver area.
Here's how it works: 50,000 readers are asked to pledge as little as $4.99 a month. If the site reaches that goal by April 23, then Denver's got a Rocky 2.0, according to InDenverTimes. Denver entrepreneurs Brad Gray, Kevin Preblud, and Benjamin Ray have plunked down an undisclosed financial figure to get the site up with 30 former Rocky employees, according to the Denver Business Journal.
At a news conference yesterday on the Auraria campus, sports columnist Sam Adams joked that the Broncos quarterback may want to leave Denver, but the former Rocky journalists are "here to stay," according to Westword.
Count local public relations guru Andrew Hudson among those who will subscribe. He wants "peace of mind that there is more than one daily news source" in Denver.
