April 17 is a "Day of Silence" meant to encourage straight school kids to stop harassing and teasing their gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender peers. But the Colorado Springs-based evangelical group Focus on the Family complains that "many public schools have stifled free speech and true diversity by silencing students of faith and those with conservative perspectives," so Focus is backing an alternative: a "Day of Truth" on April 20 that is meant to spark "an honest conversation about homosexuality." The battle over tolerance in schools comes during the trial surrounding the murder of Angie Zapata, who lived as a woman but was physically a man. Allen Andrade is accused of beating Zapata to death with a fire extinguisher last July, and his trial begins today (via The Associated Press). KUNC radio has a full preview of the case.
