Drunk Driving Is "Out of Control"

Roughly 10,000 repeat drunken drivers are caught in Colorado each year, according to an investigation of records by The Denver Post, in a system that fails to ensure such drivers stay off the road. One in three people arrested for drunken driving have at least one prior DUI. "This is out of control, and I don't know if the general public knows this," says Carolyn DeVries, a member of a state task force on DUIs, whose daughter was killed by a drunken driver in 2004. The Post found that more than 31,000 alleged drunken drivers are arrested in an average year. Westword gives the investigation props, saying it's "another reason why newspapers matter." Meanwhile, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers held a candlelight vigil on Saturday to remember the victims of crashes (via 9News).
