Jefferson County Excel Academy will close for the week because a student at the Arvada school is one of two local residents to test positive for the swine flu, bringing the number of state cases to four, according to The Denver Post. Jefferson County school Superintendent Cindy Stevenson tells 9News her district, which is the state's largest, is taking proper precautions to protect students. Around the world, 985 cases of the H1N1 swine flu virus have been confirmed--568 in Mexico alone, including 22 deaths, according to CNN, which notes 226 of the confirmed cases are in 30 U.S. states. The virus could level off in the United States, says Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noting "encouraging signs" (via The Associated Press). He also says the flu appears like any other, although he's not ready to say it's under control. The World Health Organization also remains wary and will probably declare a full-scale pandemic, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, The Times in Britain warns that even if the H1N1 strain remains benign for now, it could come back more virulent and deadly.
