What Your Elected Officials Are Worth

May 2009

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet is either the second- or third-richest lawmaker in Colorado and the 15th wealthiest senator, according to his financial disclosure statement. The Denver Post reports that in dollar terms, Bennet, a former executive for Anschutz Investment Co. and former Denver Public Schools czar, is worth between $6 million and $27 million, according to the first glance of his finances available since he was appointed in January to replace Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. In terms of wealth, Bennet is in league with fellow Democrat and Congresswoman Betsy Markey of Fort Collins, but he's well behind freshman Congressman Jared Polis, a Boulder Democrat and dot-com mogul, who is worth between $97 million and $254 million. In contrast, Congressman Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Springs Republican, is worth only $16,000 to $65,000. Overall, Colorado's nine-person delegation has perhaps six millionaires. As for Bennet, he's finally making himself known in Washington and at home, Colorado Statesman editor and publisher Jody Hope Strogoff tells KUNC radio. Bennet has been speaking about the country's health-care crisis lately, writes the Aurora Sentinel, and has introduced legislation that aims to reduce hospital re-admission rates in hopes of cutting costs.
