Perhaps there's a conspiracy to pollute the Cache la Poudre River in Fort Collins---a conspiracy of stupidity. Yesterday, another truck full of asphalt careened into the Poudre, triggering another attempted cleanup. The prior incident took place on August 26, when a truck spilled asphalt goop into the river (via 9News). Crews were able to clean up the Poudre, which is designated a federal Wild and Scenic River for its remarkable nature. The tanker that crashed yesterday was carrying 6,700 gallons of hot asphalt up the Poudre Canyon when the load shifted, about four miles from the location of the prior accident, causing the truck to topple, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. This time, however, diesel fuel was also spilled into the Poudre, which provides drinking water to Fort Collins and Greeley. The incident resulted in suspension for Colorado Department of Transportation contractor Lafarge West, which is working on Colorado Highway 14 west of Cameron Pass, according to The Denver Post: "CDOT is very concerned about the impact of these spills and is working to ensure that this issue be corrected immediately." A spokesman for Westminster-based Lafarge West was not available for comment, but the Post reports that the company subcontracted Transtank of Colorado to deliver asphalt from Denver and that the drivers in both incidents were from separate trucking companies hired by Transtank. Neither driver was seriously injured, according to news reports. The driver involved in the first incident was cited for careless driving.
