It was a good weekend to be a football fan in Colorado. The Air Force Academy did Colorado Springs proud on Saturday, downing the New Mexico Lobos 37-13 behind a strong defensive performance and solid offensive play, writes the Colorado Springs Gazette.

The Colorado State University Rams “drubbed” Nevada on Saturday in Fort Collins, 35-20 (via The Salt Lake Tribune), and the University of Colorado finally notched a win with a 24-0 smackdown of Wyoming on Saturday in Boulder (via Boulder’s Daily Camera). The CSU and Air Force wins aren’t surprising, considering both teams’ solid play during the 2009 season, but CU has looked hapless, giving up roughly 1,000 yards and nearly 80 points in two games this year.

But the biggest surprise this weekend came when the Denver Broncos easily won yesterday, taking down the Cleveland Browns 27-6 at Invesco Field at Mile High. While welcome news, the win itself isn’t the surprise—it’s the way they won.

The Broncos racked up 186 rushing yards, and 263 passing yards on their way to 451 total yards (via Mile High Report). The team has only allowed two field goals and one touchdown so far in 2009, giving them the league’s best defense in terms of opponents’ point production, according to The Denver Post (free registration required).

Sure, we’re only in week two of the season, but the defensive consistency and competency is something to behold. Pro Football Talk writes the Broncos’ defense will keep this team in the mix for quite a while. And that’s something to celebrate.
