Playoffs Watch: What the Rockies Need to Do This Week

September 28 2009, 11:17 AM
The Colorado Rockies won two of three against the very solid St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend, with both wins coming in dramatic fashion. The Rox won Friday night, 2-1, despite some truly horrible calls from the game's umpires and thanks to a walk-off, sacrifice fly by resurgent catcher Yorvit Torrealba. On Saturday, the Cardinals were able to hold the Rockies down and clinch the National League Central division with a 6-3 win. But on Sunday, the Rockies were barely able to hang on to a 4-3 win, after second baseman Clint Barmes made a crazy, over-the-shoulder catch halfway into right field. He got the ball back to first base, where Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols was tagged out, ending the game (via The Denver Post). Barmes says the wind was knocked out of him when he tumbled to the ground with the game-winning catch (via MLB.com, with video). Purple Row points out that although the Rockies have found ways to grind out a few much-needed wins, they still have the Atlanta Braves nipping at their heels (just two-and-a-half games back in the National League wild-card chase). But a win is a win, and the Rockies are still ahead of the pack for the wild-card berth. They open their last homestand of the season Tuesday night versus the Milwaukee Brewers and will have to take at least two of three games before heading into Los Angeles for the last three games of the season.
