Those sleek, WiFi-wired buses that travel between Colorado Springs and Denver are in trouble. As the Colorado Springs Gazette notes, the FrontRange Express, or FREX, was "tossed a lifesaver Thursday after nearly drowning in the flood of city budget cuts." The Colorado Department of Transportation's State Transportation Commission unanimously voted to sell between five and nine of FREX's 19-bus fleet to keep the service going next year. More than 101,000 passengers rode one way on a FREX bus during the first seven months of 2008, and between early 2008 and early 2009 ridership increased 47 percent. But "unprecedented shortfalls" in the 2010 Colorado Springs city budget, along with reduced funding from the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority, prompted the move, according to a press release cited by 11News.
