Get Moving with a Free Runners' Club

After consuming close to 10,000 daily holiday calories for the past few weeks, I was rewarded with a nasty head cold to ring in the New Year. The combination of my newly acquired sweet tooth and my lingering cough have not left me motivated to lace up my running shoes and head into the chilly winter air. But I've signed up for my second marathon (the Colfax Marathon in May) and realized I should probably get moving if I want to make it through 26.2  miles with any sort of grace or stamina. While many running clubs can get pricey, Niketown offers a free weekly Run Club on Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m. You've got your choice of a three-, five-, or seven-mile run, and they provide refreshments (let's hope that doesn't mean more leftover Christmas cookies) after the workout. 500 16th St., Ste. 130, 303-623-6453

Good luck in your marathon! Fyi, Denver Trail Runners, Boulder Trail Runners and Boulder Road Runners are all free clubs, with great people and great attendance. I run with BTR myself, and the depth of knowledge I get from my fellow runners is incredible. No nocks on Niketown, just want people to know that there are a number of great, free community-based clubs out there.
