Why Newmont Has Suspended Mining in Indonesia

Indonesia's unit of Denver-based Newmont Mining Corporation has temporarily stopped operations after a rock slide at the Batu Hijau copper and gold mine on Sumbawa island killed a bulldozer operator. PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara says in a statement that "mine operations in the pit have stopped pending investigations by the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources and PT NNT" (via Reuters). "We are cooperating fully with government authorities to investigate the causes of this accident and learn how to prevent this from happening in the future," says Darren Hall, a general manager at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara. The landslide on Sunday killed Johanis A. Dawir, 41, according to the Jakarta Globe. Mining operations are expected to resume after the investigation is complete, reports Dow Jones Newswires.
