Late last month, Colleen R. LaRose, also known as “Fatima LaRose” and “Jihad Jane,” pleaded not guilty to charges that she conspired with terrorists to assassinate a Swedish cartoonist who was considered insulting to Islam (via the Los Angeles Times). On Friday, an alleged conspirator, Jamie Paulin-Ramirez of Leadville, was flown from Ireland to Philadelphia, where she was arrested. The reportedly pregnant Paulin-Ramirez is accused of plotting to attend a terror training camp, according to The Associated Press. Her six-year-old son flew with her and was placed in the custody of child protective service workers. A new indictment in the case states that LaRose and 31-year-old Paulin-Ramirez traveled independently to Europe to support a Muslim holy war. Legal documents also claim that once LaRose was in Europe, she invited Paulin-Ramirez to attend a “training camp,” and Paulin-Ramirez allegedly accepted the invitation, traveling to meet up. Paulin-Ramirez also married a co-conspirator, whom she knew only from online discussions, according to documents. She is charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted, notes the Times in Britain. Last month, Asra Q. Nomani, an American Muslim, wrote about the “rise” of “jihadi wannabes” like LaRose and Paulin-Ramirez for New York magazine: “There will always be people who feel alienated and suffer from a profound emptiness, whether it’s from bad lives or bad choices. The rigidity of a strict system of belief can be of comfort to anyone looking for answers (and this goes for Tea Partiers, too). Radical Islam, which is conservative and puritanical, provides such sacred boundaries.” Vanessa Martinez contributed to this post.
