Rumor Mill: CU Coach Bzdelik on His Way to Wake Forest

Have the Wake Forest Demons made an offer to University of Colorado men's basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik? He has so far denied rumors of a departure, but some CU players are saying otherwise. "I know already," guard Nate Tomlinson tells Boulder's Daily Camera, who attended a Sunday-night meeting at associate head coach Steve McClain's Westminster home. "It's done pretty much." Bzdelik will reportedly be flying to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for an interview today and a formal announcement is expected either today or tomorrow. Bzdelik has a 36-58 record in his three seasons at Boulder, a less-than-stellar record that speaks more to the school's inability to recruit top-flight basketball players than Bzdelik's coaching abilities. This year the Buffs were 15-16 after a tough season and playing with a young team, and the general consensus was that things are trending up in Boulder. Bzdelik was very good as a coach at the Air Force Academy, posting a 50-16 record and leading the Falcons to an NCAA tournament appearance and the National Invitation Tournament final four. He also coached the Denver Nuggets for a stretch, going 73-119 over two-and-a-half years, notes The Associated Press. Going to Wake Forest would be a big step up for Bzdelik. The Demon Deacons were the nation's top-ranked team a little over a year ago. The school abruptly fired its coach, Dino Gaudio, last week, writes Sports Illustrated, ostensibly because of his 1-6 record in tournament play. Back in Boulder, The Denver Post reports that discussion on Bzdelik's replacement has already focused on McClain, who is "the choice of the players and their parents." McClain has an impressive resume, guiding the Wyoming Cowboys to a 157-115 record over nine seasons, earning two Mountain West titles, one NCAA tournament appearance, and three NIT appearances.
