Late-Night Mailing Tips for Tax-Day Procrastinators

Tonight at midnight is the deadline to have your 2009 taxes in the mail, leading to the usual last-minute rush on what is probably the nation's biggest day for accounting. If you can't manage to file your forms, you can request an extension on the paperwork, but you'll still be obligated to pay whatever you owe, points out 11 News in Colorado Springs. And many taxpayers might need the extra time. It turns out the new tax credits are creating confusion, according to a government report cited by 9News. About half the people claiming the homebuyer tax credit are not including the proper documents with their return, which can delay any refunds. One bit of good news: More people are getting money back from the government this year. The average refund is nearly $3,000, up about $255 from last year. As usual, some Denver-area post offices will offer late-night mail collection to accommodate the procrastinators, including two of the city's busiest: The Denver Downtown Main Post Office at 20th and Curtis streets offers final pick-up at midnight, and the Denver General Mail Facility Post Office at 53rd Place and Quebec Street will be open until midnight.
