What Senator Bennet Thinks About the Tea Party

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, the Democrat who is facing a strong challenge within his party and from Republicans, recently called conservative "tea party" activists' views on government "ludicrous," "appalling," and "nihilistic," writes The Huffington Post, which places Bennet making the remarks during a GLBT event in Denver. To drive home Bennet's views, "nihilism" is defined by the Merriam-Webster online dictionary as "a doctrine or belief that conditions in the social organization are so bad as to make destruction desirable for its own sake independent of any constructive program or possibility." Bennet was commenting on Colorado's Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, often blamed by liberal groups for going too far in limiting the growth of government. He said conservatives who support such ideas lack a sense of "responsibility to the next generation." Meanwhile, Bennet's campaign to win the November election and remain in office continues, including a new ad featuring his children. Wonkette assesses the footage, noting "either his young children are well-respected economic and political titans with lengthy, important publishing records, which give undeniable weight to their endorsements, or---for you cynics out there, lousy cynics---he believes the public will think of his young children as 'cute' and his family 'nice' and therefore Michael Bennet 'good' for a future 'vote.'"

I'm a little disappointed by the callous and uncalculated nature of Senator Bennet's remarks. Instead of recognizing that the Tea Party represents a growing angst in society regarding government growth and spending, albeit representative of views different form his own... he instead slams the entire movement and rolls down the same defamation highway as the Rush Limbaughs of the world. I have come to expect more nuance from him, but I guess having to look more liberal in a runoff with Romanoff, he has to get a few shots in at the "crazies" on the right!!! I loved Mr Bennet as DPS Chief. But he's circling the drain as a Senator, caught between a Romanoff liberal rock and a hard place and time for a Democrat to run. These remarks let off a disturbing aroma of panic...

>He said conservatives who support such ideas lack a sense of "responsibility to the next generation." Apparently, a legacy of freedom and protection of individual rights is not worth leaving to the next generation. It still amazes me when politicians -- and pundits -- try to spin government coercion into some kind of gift to society. Am I supposed to grovel in thanks? No, thank you!
