Celebrate Grow Local Colorado Day this Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Denver Urban Homesteading with a potluck aimed at uniting Denverites interested and participating in urban agriculture. Grow Local Colorado director Dana Miller says this event is for everyone---even newbie gardeners. Just bring a Colorado-inspired dish and a $5 suggested donation, as well as your own plates and cups. The potluck, which is held quarterly as the growing seasons change, is a zero-waste event. But there’s more to this gathering than simply sharing and eating good grub. Attendees are given the opportunity to introduce themselves and their projects, so expect to meet and mingle with other homegrown advocates. Grow Local Colorado's goal for 2010 is to inspire everyone in Denver to grow something at home. Last year, Mayor John Hickenlooper declared May 14 Grow Local Colorado Day and asked the group to plant vegetables in front of the City and County Building. Since then, Grow Local has partnered with Denver Parks and Recreation to add garden plots in Berkeley Park, Highlands Park, Highlands Gateway Park, and Civic Center Park. Called "Edible Public Demonstration Gardens," these plots will be run by volunteers, and the food harvested will go to organizations like the Gathering Place and the Food Bank of the Rockies.
