Eat Local, Grow Local, and Know Local Challenge

I recently interviewed Dana Miller of Grow Local Colorado, who told me about a particularly special goal of the organization: to inspire all Denver residents to grow something, from a full-blown garden to a pot of basil in the kitchen. As we continued talking, I thought of the friends who might have trouble helping to fulfill that goal. Some of them frequently travel for work. Others have dogs that eat their sprouting seedlings. And still others are often frustrated by their own non-green thumbs. Thus was born the idea of a summertime Cheap Thrills series on how to support local food---whether you're a gardener or not. Throughout the series, I'll write about CSAs, NSAs, permaculture, garden shares, volunteering, and many other related topics. And for those of you ready to get your hands dirty, I’ll have gardening tips to help you through the summer and into the fall. Over the course of the series, I’ll be mentioning lots of ways to get involved in the local food scene as a part of our Eat Local, Grow Local, and Know Local Challenge. If you read a post that appeals to you, head to Grow Local Colorado’s website and take their pledge to join the movement to support locally grown food.

Welcome to the coolest movement in our lifetime. I jumped into it with both feet in 2008. As an addict of efficiency, I asked myself how to increase my local eating by the greatest possible percentage with one food change. My answer was bread: Carbs, you know, the bottom of the food pyramid. Not being able to find local flour readily in my natural market, I sought out and am packaging local wheat flour, Pancake Mix, Cookie Mix and a millet-based pancake, muffin and bread mix.

Hey other local growers, let's get together make sure Joe starves to death WTSHTF.

Denver is exploding with exciting possibilities to get involved with local food and local, sustainable communities. We are working (in conjunction with GrowLocal as well as Terri) on a new local market focused on the smallest, most grassroots producers in Denver. It is called the Denver Handmade Homemade Market. We are creating a venue for inspired people who live in Denver and are making something in their home that they love and we are inviting them to share it with others. The 3rd Handmade Homemade Market will be July 23rd at Green Spaces - 1368 26th st - at 6pm. Check it out! denverhhm.wordpress.com
