Eat Local: Where to Find Shares of Produce

This post is a part of Cheap Thrills' summer series about eating, growing, and knowing more about local food. Want to get involved? Sign Grow Local Colorado's pledge to support locally grown food. Even those of us with the best of gardening intentions can end up with little or no produce: Bugs attack, birds swoop up the strawberries, and travel itineraries can make us miss the last of the spinach. If your own urban farming efforts aren't yielding what you need---or you haven’t yet planned how to grow your own food---it’s easy to find local, seasonal produce around Denver. Farms are still offering community supported agriculture, or CSAs, for the summer and fall. Buy a share of the farm’s crops, and it will deliver a box of produce to a nearby pick-up location (often to your local farmers' market) on a regular basis (usually each week) during the growing season. For a list of local CSAs, check out Local Harvest, which features over 30 farms offering shares. You can also buy shares of locally grown food from neighborhood supported agriculture, or NSAs. City gardeners all over Denver have excess produce, and you can now purchase a share from a local community garden. Sustainable Food Denver has a list of eight NSAs offering shares. (Tip: Click on "plants" to access the list of local NSAs.)

Hi Sporobolus, Thanks for the link! I know my site isn't that pretty, but I wanted to focus on getting good data in there. Maybe next spring I'll upgrade the look and feel. Cheers, Dan

i'm a 2nd year member of Cresset Community Farm, a CSA which has two pickup locations in Denver: http://www.CressetCommunityFarm.com Cresset is listed on localharvest.org: http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M14886 but it does not show up on the search you linked to above because actual farm is in Johnstown and the geographic search is based on nearby farms, not nearby deliveries; i suspect there are probably several other good CSAs that people might not find from your link for the same reason; changing the search to all of Colorado makes the list more inclusive, however then the map is centered near Kremmling and LocalHarvest.org makes you shuffle through 16 pages ... http://www.localharvest.org/search-csa.jsp?m&zip=80222&lat=39.680077&lon=-104.92375&scale=6 i checked around and found several other lists of Colorado CSAs; here's one that's ugly, but doesn't force you to page through 16 pages http://coloradocsas.mooreds.com/
