Summer Salad: Melita’s Greek Café & Market

I love a big salad, especially for lunch on a hot day. My latest darling is the chicken souvlaki salad at Melita’s Greek Café & Market on Lincoln Street in Capitol Hill. Tender chunks of chicken---marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and herbs---are grilled (to order, not in advance) and set alongside a fresh tumble of mixed greens, cucumber, onions, olives, pepperoncini, and tangy feta. The salad comes with two dressings: a light tzatziki and a slightly spicy oil-and-vinegar. (I prefer the refreshing cucumber-yogurt of the tzatziki.) Rounding out the dish is soft, warm pita bread, a dolma, and a triangle of sticky-sweet baklava. All this for an easy $8.45. Tip: If you like fixing Greek food at home, Melita’s has a small market where you can purchase olives, cheese, grape leaves, pita bread, and other Greek staples. But don’t wait until the last minute. Melita’s is open only until 7 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends. 1035 Lincoln St., 303-629-1624
