Boulder's Mara Abbott won the six-stage Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend, Oregon, on Sunday, finishing in 10 hours, seven minutes, and 33 seconds, reports the
Daily Camera.
Add that to Abbot's monumental victory in the 10-stage
Giro d'Italia Femminile (or the Giro Donne) earlier this month, making her the first American to win the title. She won the eighth and ninth stages of the tour, held July 2-11 in northern Italy.
Supporting her was a team of eight women, including two other Coloradans: Amanda Miller of Fort Collins and Carmen Small of Durango, writes
The Denver Post.
"Cycling isn't just about speed," Abbott explains. "There's so much strategy involved, so the more situations you see, the more you're understanding what your competitors are thinking, and the more you're able to strategize, the more you're able to think in a race beyond just something your director says to you, the more you're able to react in the moment."
