Lance Armstrong is expected to race next week to defend his title as champ of the Leadville 100, the nation's highest altitude mountain bike race (via The Associated Press). But Lance wannabes will be disappointed if they try to hit the terrain on Grand Mesa National Forest, where U.S. Forest Service officials are restricting mountain biking because of damage to forested areas. Several downhill routes created by bikers have been closed, Forest Service supervisor Charlie Richmond tells the Grand Junction Sentinel, adding that new trails will be created in coming years. Access to some 300 miles of existing routes remains in place. New mountain bike routes will be added to the Scales Lake Complex, the Flowing Park Complex, the Mesa Lakes Complex, and the Fruita Division Complex.
