Rockies Sweep Their Way Back Into Playoff Relevance

Colorado Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez finally recorded his 18th win of the season, setting a franchise record for wins in a season by a starting pitcher. Yesterday's game at Coors Field against the Cincinnati Reds started out ugly, as Jimenez gave up four runs on five hits in the third inning and walked a season-high six batters. But the demure Dominican found a way to get back on track and, along with the offense of his teammates, helped the Rockies win 10-5 (recap via Purple Row).

Jimenez is happy with the win, but not because of the individual honor that comes with a franchise record.

"We still believe we can get to the playoffs," he tells The Denver Post. "I will think about the record down the road. Helping the team is all that is important."

The win marks the fourth in a row for the Rockies, who swept the division-leading San Diego Padres over the weekend. The Rox are now four-and-a-half games back in the division race and five games back in the wild-card chase. They have 25 games left (15 at home and 10 on the road), so the team is officially back in the playoff hunt, making this another interesting September for local baseball fans.

Need another reason to pay attention? Carlos Gonzalez. As the Post notes, CarGo is on a 14-game hitting streak and is a legit contender for the Triple Crown. He's hitting a league-leading .340 and is in the top five in home runs (31) and RBIs (97).
