Obsession: Kuulture's Açai Bowls

It used to be that when I popped into Kuulture, a downtown frozen yogurt shop, it was for a swirl of the creamy peanut butter flavor. While that's still a favorite treat, my attention has turned to the açai bowls.

To understand these bowls, you must know they do not contain any frozen yogurt. In fact, they're more of a meal than they are an indulgence. The premise is this: frozen açai berries and organic fruit whirled up in a blender, adorned with organic hemp granola and agave nectar. From there, you add the toppings of your choice: fresh fruit, shredded coconut, etc. It's sort of a thicker, sorbet-like smoothie with add-ons.

The bowls originated in Brazil and spread to Hawaii, where surfers eat them for quick, healthy fuel. The combinations are inherently vegan, dairy-free, and packed with antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. In short, this is a treat that's actually good for you.

After her brother discovered the craze in Hawaii, Kuulture owner Hidemi Ena brought the concept back to Denver, where she serves four varieties. Each tastes distinctly different, and while I can't pick a favorite, I'm leaning toward the Superman: a tart blend of açai, blackberry, pomegranate, strawberry, and blueberry that's garnished with granola, dark chocolate, blueberries, banana, and agave nectar.

Tip: The bowls are not currently listed on Kuulture's menu (new boards have been ordered), but they're available.
