Jelly, a two-week-old breakfast joint on the corner of East 13th Avenue and Pearl Street, might be my new morning staple. The cheerful restaurant specializes in house-made jams and jellies (and the preserves live up to the promise), as well as a menu that gives you reason to jump out of bed.

Wade through tempting options such as bacon pancakes, Bhakti Chai French toast, and sweet-potato hash with Mexican chorizo, but don’t miss the breakfast sliders. Sandwiched on a toasted bun, the Savory’s mini goat-cheese frittata with bacon and spinach-walnut pesto is especially robust, but the Garden’s mix of julienne zucchini, caramelized onion, and roasted-red-pepper frittata topped with whipped herb cream cheese isn’t far behind.

Pancakes arrive golden and fluffy, the bacon crispy, and the eggs buttery. Jelly’s coffee is especially good—strong and more reminiscent of an American roast than drip. The only hiccup is the fried-to-order doughnut bites, which are more doughy and biscuity than they are light. Still, they’re bite-size and can be filled with house-made fruit-flavored jam (the filling changes regularly).
