Unlikely Tools for Tackling Homeless Issues

February 2011

You may have noticed some Denverites donning their best sleepwear and lounge clothes in public this week. They were likely headed to a fundraiser for Denver's Road Home as part of a coordinated effort to end homelessness, writes the Denver Post. The nonprofit will directly benefit from various events commemorating the sixth annual PJ Day, setting the stage for the first National Sleep-in Day this Saturday.

Democratic state Senator Lucia Guzman is taking a different approach to homeless advocacy with proposed legislation that would grant protections to the vulnerable population under Colorado's hate crimes laws. Earlier this month, the Senate Judiciary Committee heard unusually "emotional" testimony on the bill, the Post reported—even from those who opposed it. This week, the measure narrowly cleared its latest hurdle, the Finance Committee, on a party-line vote with Democrats in favor, notes the Associated Press, although it must pass one more committee before advancing to a full-Senate vote.
