The Larimer County Republican Party, which played a critical role in deposing former Democratic Congresswoman Betsy Markey, is likely facing what appears to be the largest campaign finance fine ever in Colorado history—more than $100,000—in a debacle that has led county chairman Larry Carillo to resign and left local Democrats outraged (Fort Collins Coloradoan). The county party failed to file seven required disclosures in 2010 and now must assemble the reports—and quickly since hundreds of dollars in fines are accruing each day. Carillo has apparently provided unorganized boxes of papers he says were given to him by treasurers.

To make matters worse, outgoing state party chairman Dick Wadhams says the Larimer GOP shouldn't look to his office for financial assistance in paying the fines. "We really won't be able to help on that," he says. "County parties are responsible for raising and spending their own funds." Until now, 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes held the record for largest campaign-finance fine in the state: $17,500 "for improper documentation of payments to himself" (Loveland Reporter-Herald).
