False Advertising: J's Noodles & New Thai

Last week on Westword's Cafe Society blog, a banner ad caught my attention: J's Noodles & New Thai Restaurant was advertising that it had received 5280's Editors' Choice for Best Thai.

That's a half truth: Our praise is reserved for the original location--now called J's Noodles Star Thai--on South Federal Boulevard. It's misleading because, thanks to an owner split, J's Noodles & New Thai (located on South Parker Road) is not nearly as good, and that restaurant hasn't garnered any awards from us.

Confused? Read more here.

Not exactly false advertising

My understanding is that Star Thai location was co-owned by Sammy Teawdeswan when it won the many awards.  Sammy then opened another location- New Thai on Parker. The awards followed him to New Thai...since he was co-owner when awards were won. The current owners of Star Thai (Sammy's sister) were not involved in the restauraunt when the awards were won.  So I think that it was agreed upon by the Star Thai owners that Sammy keep the awards. There is no animosity between the two locations.

To accuse a business of false advertising can be very destructive. I am Sammy's Westword ad rep and he has all of the original awards at his Parker ave location. So it may be a grey area and beg the question does the award follow the person or stay with the real estate...but Sammy is a sweet guy and is not trying to falsely advertise or misrepresent. As far as the food quality, I'm guessing that it is good at both locations- since both are in the same family.
